The national park and four adjoining protected areas stretch from the fjord
landscape at Melfjorden in the west across Svartisen, extending to the
mountain areas along the Swedish border.
Svartisen is the largest glacier
glacier in northern Scandinavia (370
quare kilometers). Glomdalen offers polished marble, caves and underground
rivers. Stormdalen's mountain-birch forest has an unusually high plant
production. Calcareous areas are oases for demanding flowering plants,
and the area has large mountain avens heaths interspersed with such exclusive species as the Lapland rose.
