PAPER-17: Impact of Sewage Irrigation on Soil Properties
in Gabbur Village of Hubli-Dharwad

Abstract:

Gabbur village lies on the outskirts of Hubli city wherein the sewage of the city runs through Gabbur village. The sewage water is used for irrigation. Wastewater is generated largely from residential areas and to a lesser extent from industries and hospitals. About 15 million gallons of wastewater is generated per day in the twin cities of Hubli-Dharwad and could cause problems for user, as it is not treated. The raw sewage is being utilised by the farmers in nearby villages of Hubli-Dharwad for the last 30-35 years to grQw various crops especially vegetables. The farmers of Gabbur. village who used sewage water encountered problems like seed germination, heavy weed infestation, skin diseases, increase in mosquito population etc. Hence the proposed investigation may help to evaluate the effect of sewage water on physico-chemical properties of soil in order to maintain sustained soil health and crop production.
