Data and Study area

Remote sensing data of Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) and Landsat Enhance TM Plus (ETM+) for the period 1999 to 2008 were downloaded from public domain (http://glovis.usgs.gov/, http://glcfapp.glcf.umd.edu:8080/esdi/index.jsp).  Data pertains to five years series - 1999, 2000, 2003, 2006 and 2008. Urban dynamics was analysed for Greater Bangalore with circular buffer of 10 km considering the City Business District as centre Figure 1.  It is capital city of Karnataka with an area of 741 sq. km., lies between 12°39’00’’ to 13°13’00’’N and 77°22’00’’ to 77°52’00’’E. It is one of the fastest growing cities in India and is branded for heralding and spearheading the growth of Information Technology (IT) based industries in the country. It is the fifth largest metropolis in India The population of Bangalore is about 8 million (Ramachandra and Kumar, 2008; Sudhira et al., 2007).
