Abstract Introduction Study Area Results and Discussion

Abstract

Microalgae in wetlands provide several beneficial ecosystem services to the society, such as provisioning services, regulating services, and cultural services. Microalgae have been recognised as an indicator of trophic status and water quality in lakes. Microalgae serve as a source of proteins, fatty acids, minerals, and essential bioactive compounds, hence they are widely used for industrial and commercial purposes. The current issue of Sahyadri E News focuses on the economic valuation of microalgae in the wetlands of Shivamogga district, Karnataka. The provisioning, regulating, and cultural services provided by microalgae in the wetlands of Shivamogga district was 1446, 3576, and 575 million Rs/year respectively. The total ecosystem supply value (TESV) of ecosystem services provided by microalgae accounted to 5597 million rupees per year and the net present value (NPV) accounted to 144 billion rupees. This study emphasizes the urgent need to protect the valuable wetland ecosystem and its biodiversity.

Key words: Microalgae, Wetland, Provisioning service, Cultural service, Regulating service, TESV, NPV
