The Energy and Wetlands Research Group at the Centre for Ecological Sciences (CES), is actively involved in studies and training on issues related to environment, water resources, energy, ecology, wetlands, geographic information systems, environmental impact assessment and natural resource management.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) was founded in 1909 as a result of the joint efforts of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, the Government of India and the Maharaja of Mysore. In 1886, Jamsetji Tata conceived of a university of science that will work for the benefit of India, and in 1898 created an endowment for establishing such an institution.
Over the 105 years since its establishment, IISc has become the premier institute for advanced scientific and technological research and education in India. Beginning with 2 departments and 21 students in 1911, today IISc has 39 departments, units, or centres, 3500 students, and about 500 academic and scientific staff, supported by 600 administrative personnel. Out of this population of students, about 2200 are in various PhD programs, almost 900 are enrolled for various Masters degrees, whereas about 400 are registered in the newly established, research oriented, four-year Bachelor of Science (Research) programme, of which the first batch will graduate in 2015.

Students for Development (SFD) initiated in 1990 to promote the need for sustainable development in its right form. Not just the environmental issues such as water conservation and management, plastic recycling, ban on plastic usage, forest conservation, etc. but also the issues related to the development in holistic sense that are concerned with the cultural, economic and physical (materialistic) development of person, society, nation and mankind are also dealt with so that the meaning of ‘Development’ is understood by the people in its right spirit. Then the question arises what is ‘Development’? How to understand the right meaning of ‘Development’? SFD is initiated to make understand, promote and disseminate the right concept of ‘Development’ to all people in General and students in specific.

The Karnataka Environment Research Foundation (KERF), a non-profit and non - government organisation, was founded to raise public awareness conserning the seriousness of the environmental problems in Karnataka. The founder of KERF, Dr.C.Rajasekara Murthy, is a Canadian Environmental Scientist of International repute, and a native of Bangalore. He took special interest and initiative in establishing KERF with the help of committed group of engineers and scientists from Karnataka. The Objectives and activities of the Foundation have been focused towards developing scientific, technological and practical solutions to environmental problems, and also towards developing a long term plan of action in collaboration with the Government of Karnataka and its agencies responsible for environmental protection.
