Lakes and wetlands constitute a
major portion of the total surface fresh water. In Tirupur, the
industrialisation of the town and increase in the population, the river Noyyal
and nearby wetlands face serious threat of pollution. As the wetland comes under
the city corporation limit, a large human settlement is seen living in its banks
and hence the wetland and river gets polluted and the quality of water gets
considerably deteriorated. The objective of this study is to investigate the
metal content in both biotic and abiotic component of Andipalayam lake and the
Noyyal river at Tirupur, Tamilnadu. The samples were collected and analysed for
metals like copper, zinc, iron and Manganese. The observation of the study
reveals that the metal content of water and sediment at river Noyyal and
Andipalayam lake was considerably higher. The accumulation in plankton and in
tissues of various fishes (common Carp, Claris
baitrachus, Tilapia, Macronis keteius
etc) was also high.
