Fluoride
is found in our food, soil, vegetation, etc. The significance of fluoride in
drinking water has long been studied. Fluoride has both detrimental and
beneficial effect on the environment. The beneficial effect of fluoride is its
capability to help prevent dental cavities when an optimum amount is present.
However, on the other side, long term consumption of water containing excessive
amount of fluoride can lead to fluorosis of teeth and bones.
Mylaudy,
a village near Kanyakumari, is one of the places worst affected by dental
fluorosis. Fluorosis has been prevalent in this area for about a decade. Hence,
it was decided to analyse the fluoride ion concentration in drinking water in
this area. Drinking water samples were collected from different sources. A door
to door survey was conducted in the form of questionnaire. We have also arrived
at certain important conclusions, which will be discussed.
