Abstract: Commissioning tests and periodic on-site maintenance checks are essential for the safe and outage free operation of power transformers routine electric tests and advanced diagnostic techniques in accordance with the IEC 60060-3, IEC 60076, IEEE Std.C57.12.00. IEEE Std.C57.152 2013, and GOST 11677-85 standards can be performed with a dedicated test system. These tests are also valuable in troubleshooting in case of an outage. Deterioration of electrical insulation can be identified with the high voltage insulation tests (insulation resistance, dissipation factor and capacitance measurement, dielectric frequency response). Mechanical damage due the transport or the effect of faults, multifunctions and winding shorts are typically found using frequency response analysis, winding resistance measurement and onload tap changer tests. Confirmation of ratio, vector group, no-load and short-circuit losses is desirable after repairs to ensure that these have been carried out to a high standard. Oil samples are routinely taken for breakdown tests and gas analysis.

Abstract: Earlier, since Independence, the Indian power sector was dominated by state-and centrally owned vertically integrated utilities. When the Indian economy opened up in the early 1990s, large-scale liberalisation and industrialization led to a rapid increase in the demand for power. To meet this demand, the quantum of investment needed grew exponentially and cold no longer be supported by the government. Hence, power generation was de-licensed and opened to private investment in 1991, resulting in Independence Power Plants (IPP). After five years, the focus shifted to unbundling of the State Electricity Boards (SEBs) to ensure better returns from the generation and transmission businesses.

According to the strategic plan of MNRE for the period of 2011-2017, 20 million solar lights are estimated to avoid the use 1 billion liters of kerosene per annum in 2020 and 5 million sq. m. thermal collectors are expected to save fuel oil of about 350 million liters per annum in 2020.

Abstract: Unscientific coal mining in Jaintia Hils, Meghalaya has severely degraded the environment of the area. The water of the area has become highly acidic and contaminated with different impurities making the water unsuitable for domestic and irrigation uses leading to scarcity of clean water in the mining area. Acid mine drainage (AMD) has been recognized as the main cause of water pollution. This calls for an urgent action to improve the quality of water to ease the water stress in the area. Laboratory experiments involving treatment of acidic water using locally available limestone and subsequent filtration through the layers of activated charcoal and sand yielded promising results towards the improvement of water quality. Treatment with limestone raised the pH from 2.8 -7.31, well within the acceptable limit. Subsequent filtration improved the water quality further by bringing the values of calcium, turbidity, total dissolved solids (TDS), alkalinity and metals, such as zinc and aluminium within the acceptable limits prescribed by Bureau of Indian Standards. The promising results of the present study can be used for designing suitable filtration units for domestic uses as well as for treatment of stream water for irrigation and ecological purposes.

Abstract: The waste water discharged by slaughterhouse industries is categorized mainly by high COD, high BOD, high suspended and complex mixture of fats, proteins and fibres which needs systematic treatment before the disposal. In the present study , the performance of 3.26 L upflow anaerobic hybrid reactor treating the slaughter house wastewater .After seeding , the reactor with maintained , inlet flow of 135.72 mL/h is loaded with different dilution ratios of the sample (1/10, 1/6, ¼ and 1/1 or undiluted) with different COD loadings (9.281 kg.COD /m3 day, 10.149 kg.COD /m3 day, 9.263 kg.COD/m3 day and 11.210 kg.COD/m3 day) with HRT of 24 hr and achieved maximum COD removal efficiency up to 73.32% at COD loading of 11.210 kg.COD/m3 day. Alongwith the COD , other required parametrers, suchas phosphorus, BOD, TSS, VSS and volatile acid and acetic acid are also found out to check the efficiency of the reactor.
