Introduction Energy is pivotal for the economic growth of a nation. Energy sources are mainly classified into renewable and non-renewable energy sources. The current issue of Sahyadi E News (Issue LXXIII) presents the district-wise energy situation in Karnataka state, considering resources availability and energy demand. Energy resources status in Karnataka is accounted by assessing the availability of resource share was assessed considering (i) energy generated from the various resources in Karnataka and (ii) the energy supply from outside the state. The district-wise energy demand was analyzed for Karnataka based on energy consumption from various sources like electricity, fuelwood, coal, etc. The energy generation versus consumption was evaluated to assess the current energy situation in Karnataka. Highlights of the research are⦁ Electricity generated through thermal power plants, constitutes 67% of total energy generated in the Karnataka ⦁ There are 21 major hydroelectric projects in Karnataka, and the most share of hydroelectric power generation was from the SGS project of Sharavathi river. The SGS project generated its energy of 4196 MU. ⦁ energy production from wind resources is 7.31MU and solar plants is about 37 MU ⦁ annual per capita electricity consumption is about 765.9 kWh per person ⦁ Daily fuelwood requirement for cooking 1.88±0.09, water heating 1.07±0.14 and total 2.93±0.22 kgs per person per day ⦁ Total fuelwood requirement in the state is about 61 million tonnes per year (2011) and 71.65 million tonnes per year (2021) ⦁ Liquid fuel for transportation is about 19 billion litres per year ⦁ Coal requirement for electricity generation is 5537 million tonnes per year ⦁ Biogas potential of animal residues is 1.24 billion m3 |
