Abstract: Deforestation as a cause of ecological degradation, of all the environmental problems facing the country, has received maximum public attention. In India, official estimates show that the country has lost about 4.04 million km2 of forestland. Recent study of National Remote sensing Agency (NRSA) has confirmed that in a span of 6--7 years, forest cover has been reduced from 16.89 to 14.10%. A joint exercise by the forest survey of India was undertaken for preparing an authentic vegetation map.
