Abstract

While studying the calciocolous associations of the Bombay State, the authors came across an interesting species of Arthraxon growing exclusively on the walls of Purandhar Fort, which is situated at a height of 4500ft above sea-level 26 miles from Poona. It should be stated the outset that there are six recorded species of Arthraxon to be found in the Bombay state, namely A. inermis Hook, A. serrulatus Hochst., A. meebolidii Stapf, A. lancifolius Hochst, A. qartinianus Nash., and A. jubatus Hack. It is interesting to note that all of them are seasonal and flower during the monsoon. All are calcicolous and are found growing luxuriantly on walls. Our species is, therefore, being described here as a new species and it is named after Purandhar fort on which it was found.
