Abstract: This paper examines the possibility of using bottom ash as partial replacement of fine aggregate (FA) in concrete. Super plasticizer is used to increase the workability of concrete with lower water cement ratio. The percentage of bottom ash added by weight was 0, 20, 30, 40, 50, as replacement of FA used in concrete. Experimental Investigations carried out to a study the effective use of bottom ash which falls into Thermal power plants (Ennore). But in this paper the various strength properties studied consist of compressive strength, split tensile strength, of and flexural strength of concrete were analysed by replacing bottom ash as fine aggregate. The strength development for various percentages (0-50 %) of replacement of fine aggregate with bottom ash can easily be equated to the strength development of normal concrete with various ages.

Abstract: Adsorption is as an alternative technology to remove colour from wastewater. In this study, low cost adsorbent (Rice husk and Papaya seeds) has been utilized as the adsorbent for the removal of basic dyes from aqueous solution. A basic dye, Methylene Blue (MB) has been used as the adsorbate. Effect of pH, adsorbent dose, initial concentration of dye and contact time was studied. Colour was effectively removed at all selected pH, and the increase in dosage showed an increase in the removal percentage. The adsorption equilibrium for colour was reached after 90 minutes of contact time. The adsorption followed both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. Gibb ' s free energy values obtained confirmed that the process was feasible and spontaneous (?G = -24.44, -23.90, and -22.75 kJ/mol). The value of ?H (-49.12 kJ/mol) indicated that an exothermic chemisorptions had taken place. The value of ? S (-0.084kJ/mol) suggested that the randomness decreased after adsorption. The experimental data were fitted into Lagergren pseudo second order, the chemisorptions. The colour removal efficiency for Rice husk and Papaya seeds were 85 % and 70 % respectively for batch studies.

Abstract: Crium (IV) tungstate has been prepared and characterizd by elemental analysis (EDS), XRD, thermal analysis (TGA) and spectral analysis (FTIR, UV-Visible) in addition to ion exchange capacity and chemical stability. The protons contained in the structural hydroxyl groups of the material are the active sites. The material shows good potential as cation exchanger and Bronsted acid catalyst. Na+ exchange capacity was found to be 1.77 meq/g.Propyl acetate has been obtained in high yield (89%) using Cerium (IV) tungstate as solid acid catalyst. The use of CW as solid acid catalyst also eliminates the problem of acid pollution in esterification reactions where sulphuric acid is the conventional catalyst.

Abstract: This work assesses the possibility of using cow dung slurry sludge in USAB reactors applied to the treatment of dairy wastewater and studies the effect o time on the performance of the reactors. This has effectively removed BOD, COD and other parameters because of the combined suspended and attached growth processes. The reactors must be operated at loads under 2400 mg COD in order to attain a conversion to methane of the removed COD above 78.33 %. The mass fraction of methane increased with increasing operational temperature in the UASB reactors. The first-order kinetics was found to be suitable for representation of the substrate removal. The kinetic constant decreased respectively. Prediction of effluent COD and methane production rate during continuous reactor operation was possible using the first-order kinetic model. An influent COD concentration of 2400 mg/L was utilized at steady state condition. Monod kinetic models were employed to describe microbial activities of dairy wastewater in n anaerobic digester.

Abstract: Copper slag (CS) is a by-product obtained during the metal smelting and refining of copper. It is one of the materials being considered as a waste and many researchers have investigated the possibility of using copper slag as a replacement of fine aggregate in concrete matrix. This paper reports the results of feasibility studies of copper slag were determined experimentally. The concrete mixtures were prepared with the proportions of copper slag were determined experimentally. The concrete mixtures were prepared with the proportions of copper slag as fine aggregate replacement ranging from 0 % (for the control concrete) to 100 % (copper slag concrete). The specimens were carried out for testing to determine the compressive strength, tensile and flexural strength for age 7, 28 and 60 days of curing and also to determine the workability by slump test. Adding up to 40 % of copper slag as sand replacement yielded more strength with that of conventional M35 grade concrete. However, further addition of copper slag caused reduction in strength with that of control concrete specimens due to the increase of free water content in the mix. Hence it is suggested that 40 % weight of copper slag can be used as replacement of fine aggregate for the nominal standard M35 grade concrete for the Construction Industries.

Abstract: The study of a waste dump from a steel mill complex covering an area of approximately 154, 400 m2 in Zapla, Jujuy, Argentina, has shown a remarkable restoration of the terrain and landscape as a consequence of weathering of the slag and deposited cyclone dust. The material behaved as natural laterites disintegrating and being incorporated into a new horizon. Physicochemical and biological environmental factors were the agents of transformation. A primary ecological succession was established and contributed definitely for the restoration of the site. The settlement of wildlife species is being constrained by human activities; however, fauna and flora of the local ecosystem are now present and visible.

Abstract: An analysis of physico-chemical and bacteriological characteristics of soil and water samples with varying levels of exposure to textile industrial effluents, obtained from Noyyal river basin, was performed in this study. The results shed some light on the extent of pollution in the area and its implications. pH, electrical conductivity, available N,P, and K, were the soil parameters analyzed. pH, Turbidity, Chlorides, TSS and TDS were the parameters investigated for water samples. Microbial screening was also performed and viable counts of halophilic bacteria were obtained by serial dilution and plating of the samples in a growth medium containing 23 % (v/v) NaCl. Six bacterial colonies in the plates exhibiting visible difference in morphology were subcultured and maintained as pure cultures on agar slants. They were employed for biodegradation of three synthetic azo dyes, namely, Reactive Blue, Reactive Yellow and an effluent dye. The isolate KASI imparted a maximum of 90 % decolorization of Reactive Red and 57 % decolorization of Reactive Blue. 61 % decolorization of Reactive blue was brought about by strain PAS 1 and 75 % decolorizationn of effluent dye by PAS2. Two of the isolates KAS1 and PAS2 were identified by matrix Assisted Desorption/Ionization-Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) as belonging to Alcaligenes sp and Bacillus sp, respectively.

The effect of mass fraction on Coefficient of Performance (COP), exergy lost, Exergic efficiency, efficiency defect and the Evaporating temperature achieved were investigated for different mass fractions. In accordance with the environmental issues and the process of sustainable development, the Three Component Zeotropic Mixture of R290/ R170 / R14 with the mass fraction of 0.257: 0.193: 0.55 was performing best with the suggestion of an alternative refrigerant for Three stage Auto Refrigerating Cascade (3 stage ARC) System operating at Very low evaporating temperature in the range of 179 K (-94?C) at COP of 0.262 and comparatively increased Exergic efficiency up to 7.3 % (67.9 %). The better performance with COP of 0.306 and Exergic efficiency of 63.3 % at around 190K (-83? C) have eliminated based on the fact that the lower most evaporating temperature was not achieved.

Abstract: This paper comprises of the experimental study of eight column specimens. Out of which six are Double Skinned Hollow Concrete Filled steel Tubular (DSHCFT) columns annularly in-filled with Self compacting concrete (SCC) of M25 grade and steel tubes of yield strength 250 Mpa and the remaining two are RCC (SSC) columns cast with the same SCC M25 grade of concrete and aspect ratio as that used for the DSHCFT specimens. Tests on the specimens were carried out under axial compressive load and with the experimental observations; various characteristics such as load deflection curve, stiffness, failure mode, confinement of concrete, ultimate compressive strength and ductility are discussed. For DSHCFT columns with a constant value of ' Diameter / thickness ratio ' of inner steel tube, slenderness ratio, grade of in-filled SCC and hollowness ratio, the effect of variation of outer steel tube thickness on the behavior of DSHCFT columns are reported. The experimental results are compared with the RCC (SSC) columns. Suitability of two different codes is verified. Within the scope of this investigation and its available results, some simplified equations for obtaining the ultimate strength of DSHCFT columns filled with self-compacting concrete for three various ratios of diameter of outer tubes and thickness of outer tubes (D? / t?) of 57, 71 and 104 with constant diameter/thickness ratio of inner tubes (Di / ti ) of 25, slenderness ratio (?sc ) of 16.7, grade of in-filled SCC of M25 and hollowness ratio (?) of 0.36 are presented.

Abstract: Ground water is the chief source of drinking water in entire Koshi region of North Bihar (India) where the layer of ground water is approximately 8-9 ft. below the ground surface. But the nature and physicochemical properties of ground water especially this area of Koshi region are very critical and alarming for those using it for drinking purposes. The dumping of domestic wastes, sewage, agricultural effluents, industrial effluents, fertilizers, usage of pesticides, unorganized urbanization with substandard construction of septic tanks in urban and rural areas are the most important reasons which cause polluted water and diarrhea, dysentery, malaria, blue baby syndrome etc. The present work in this area is on study of nitrate levels for two yrs. (from Oct.2008 to March 2010) aftermath the disastrous Flood 2008 in Koshi region of north Bihar (India).
