Abstract: In 50 Ground water samples collected from different localities in Erode Taluk, Tamil Nadu were analysed for their physico-chemical characteristics. The analysis result was compared with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and World Health Organization (WHO) standards of drinking water quality parameters namely pH, Electrical conductivity, calcium, Magnesium, chloride, total dissolved solids, total hardness, sodium, sulphate and nitrate, etc. The usefulness of these parameters in predicting ground water quality characteristics were discussed. These parameters are used for assessing the water quality of Erode Taluk, Tamil Nadu. In this present study indicate that all the water samples are within the permissible limit, the water is used for drinking purpose.

Abstract: Nowadays, humans are inducing environmental changes in the planet as a whole. The waste minimization/ water conservation in recent years has also resulted in addition of toxic residues in the environment. The paramount importance of environmental challenges is to dispose off these residues through proper techniques and keep the pollutant level in the effluent stream below the tolerant limit to comply with environmental norms. Though, India has implemented relatively stringent environmental regulations, the country continues to encounter enormous environmental problems, many of these due the result of industrial activities. This is also the case with leather tanning industry. This study deals with electro chemical treatment of leather effluent using electro coagulation method. The effects of initial concentration, pH and electrolyte concentration on COD, TOC and TDS removal efficiency were studied at various operating conditions.

Abstract: The scope of ecotoxicological evaluation of heavy metal pollution in soil was tested from the oxidative stress responses in a detritivore microarthropod species Cuphoderus javanus Borner (Collembola: Insecta) exposed to sub-lethal levels of cadmium and lead treated lateritic soil in microcosms. Chronic toxicity of cadmium was higher than lead on life history parameters of 10-day-old stock of C.javanus (mortality increased by62 5 and 27 %, moulting declined by 69% and 45 %, and fecundity decreased by 97 % and 41%, respectively, over the controls, at 200 mg cadmium sulphate/lead acetate kg-1 soil, in 16 days). In contrast, oxidative stress effects were evident within 7 days for both metals at 200 mg kg-1lateritic soil or river sand. Levels of thio-barbituric acid reactive substances and hydrogen peroxide increased in whole body homogenate, but glutathione content and glutathione-S-transferase activity decreased. Similar trends of stress in soil and sand suggested that toxicity was produced by the exposed metal content in the matrix. Therefore, short-term oxidative stress responses in C. javanus are potential biomarkers, and a new approach for monitoring heavy metal pollution in soil.

Abstract: Rhizosphere-living bacteria that exert a global beneficial effect on plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). Presently, PGPR include representatives from very diverse bacterial taxa. The modes of action of PGPR involve complex mechanisms to promote plant growth, development and protection. Important among them are biofertilization (increasing the availability of nutrients to plant), phytostimulation (plant growth promoting, usually by the production of phytohormones) and biocontrol (controlling diseases, mainly by the production of antibiotics and antifungal metabolites, lytic enzymes and induction of plant defense responses). Most of the organisms produce IAA in presence of tryptophan. In present study it was observed that as the concentration of tryptophan in the medium increases, the amount of IAA produced increased. Out of the 29bacterial isolates derived from rice plant, isolate T6 was found to be efficient producer of IAA and was identified as Rhizobium. Using different concentrations of tryptophan from (1mg/ml-5 mg/mL) in the medium, IAA production increased within 24 hrs. Under variable tryptophan concentration the isolate T6 showed maximum production at 3 mg/mL of tryptophan concentration.

Abstract: The effects of acephate on microbial activities in alluvial soil (Typic Ustochrepts) under controlled laboratory conditions were examined. Acepahate was applied at recommended dose (RD) and double the recommended dose (2RD). The change in microbial activity was measured by soil respiration (evolution of CO2), microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and fluorescein diacetate (FDA) hydrolysis over a period of 42 days. The laboratory incubation study was carried out at 60 % of maximum water holding capacity of soils at 28 ? 2 ?. Samples were collected for the analysis at 7, 14, 21, 28, and 42 days after acephate application. Acephate application resulted in positive effect on soil respiration and FDA.MBC changed but for a short period. It can be concluded that the effect of acephate on the soil microbial activity depended on its application rate and duration of activity. However, the changes detected were found to be transient but field studies are required for obtaining more realistic picture long-term.

Abstract: The removal of nickel and chromium from aqueous solution by adsorption on Pisum sativum and Vigna radiata was studied as a function of initial metal ion concentration, contact time, initial pH of the solution and adsorbent dosage. It was found that optimum pH for nickel and chromium removal by the Pisum sativum and Vigna radiata was 4.0. At the optimal conditions, metal ion sorption increased as the initial metal concentration was increased. The batch experiment results showed that the maximum percentage removal was 99 % and desorption efficiency in water was 85 %. The metal adsorption data were fitted to kinetics as well as various isotherm models and the parameters were evaluated. It was found that the pseudo second order rate expression more suitable for this adsorption.

Abstract: SRM University Kattankulathur campus hosts three Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) within the premises which are located behind the dental college, behind the SRM General hospital and beside girls hostel. These plants are designed and constructed such that it minimizes and removes organic matter, nutrients, solids (both suspended and dissolved), disease carrying organisms and other domestic swage constituents before it is disposed on land. It was revealed from the performance study of the STPs from October 2013 to March 2014 that the capacity of STP 1 is lesser compared to the daily inflow and the removal efficiency of all the three treatment plants in terms of TDS was very low to almost negligible. In STP 1 BOD, COD, TSS, TDS and turbidity average removal efficiency were 78.30, 80.71, 58.225, 2.61 and 73.78 % , while in STP II BOD, COD,TSS, TDS and turbidity average removal efficiency were 44.55, 42.80, 50.96, 3.786 and 70.59 % and in STP III BOD, COD, TSS, TDS and turbidity average removal efficiency were 85.88, 88.975, 60.19, 8.29 and 92.22 %. The order of efficiency of the three sewage treatment plants were STP III >STP II >STP I. Additionally, the methods for improvement in efficiency is discussed.

Abstract: The city of Kolkata has a unique network of canals which have sustained the geomorphics of the city for centuries. Presently, there has been human and natural degeneration on this network. The canal system which contained the city literally has been overburdened by sewage disposals and encroachments. The study of two canals, the Circular canal and the Tolly ' s Nala has been to highlight the water quality of the canals and determine if at all there is any pattern to the pollution in the canals. The location of the megacity and the future sustenance of the same would depend on how healthy the canals are as they have a huge flushing effect on the silt of the lower Bengal region which is predominantly the riverine area of Hugli. Planners and developers need assess the importance of the twin canals rather that diverting, blocking and chocking them for meager short term gains.

Abstract: Plasticulture is crucial to Indian agriculture in view of the changing technological scenario for boosting crop yields and productivity. It is actually a boon to dryland farmers. Major advantages of using plastic mulch to retain soil moisture, prevent nutrient leaching, provide weed control, reduce insect and disease damage, increase earliness, yield and quality of certain vegetable crops. The present investigation was carried out during summer season 2011 at Horticulture Instructional Farm, Department of Horticulture, Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University, Sardarkrushinagar (Gujarat), India. The experiment was laid in Randomized Block Design with four replications and nine treatments viz., (T1) black polyethylene mulch, (T2) white polythethylene mulch, (T3) silver polyethylene mulch, (T4) transparent polyethylene mulch, (T5) red polyethylene mulch, (T6) yellow polyethylene mulch, (T7) blue polyethylene mulch, (T8) biological mulch and (T9) control (no mulch). The results revealed that soil covered with silver polyethylene mulch achieving the maximum gross return (Rs 4, 04, 760), net return (Rs 3, 38, 895) and cost: benefit ratio (1: 6.14) in muskmelon.

Abstract: Surface water samples (n-328) from different districts of Kerala, India was screened for the presence of Listeria organisms. The organisms were identified up to species level by biochemical tests and pathogenesity assays. The results were confirmed using a commercial lateral flow assay kit. Nine isolates of Listeria were obtained which included L.innocua (seven isolates), L.grayi and L. ivanovii (One isolate each). The pH and Chemical oxygen demand (COD) of the water samples were also assessed .The pH of the samples ranged from 5.2 to 8.9 with an average of 7.10 ? 0.0323. The COD ranged between 3 mg/L to 4554 mg/L. On statistical analysis using regression correlation analysis, it was found that the presence of Listeria had significant correlation with COD of the water samples (P < 0.01).

Abstract: The environmental quality is greatly focused on water because of its importance in maintaining the human health and health of the ecosystems. The Water Quality Index (WQI) is an arithmetic tool used to transform large water quality data into a single number which represents the water quality level for human consumption. In the present study (April 2012 to March 2013), surface water samples in summer, monsoon and winter seasons were collected at three sampling sites in the Budhi Gandak River near Khagaria for assessment of river water quality. The water quality variables analyzed for assessment of river water quality included temperature, pH, turbidity, total dissolved solids (TDS), conductivity, total hardness (TH), dissolved oxygen (DO), total alkalinity (TA), phosphate (PO4-P), nitrate (NO3-N) and chloride (Cl-). The results indicated that most of the physico-chemical parameters were within the WHO limits (1998) and BIS: 10500 (2004-2005) for drinking water except turbidity values which exceeded (18.55-58.37 NTU) the maximum permissible limit of Indian standards at all the three sites in all the three seasons (except site II value during winter). The seasonal water quality data showed the pH in the range of 4.9-8.71 mg/L and total hardness in the range of 187.5-246.0 mg/L. A water quality index was calculated considering relative weights of 9 water quality parameters following the calculation method prescribed by Ramakrishnaiah et al., 2009 and Gebrehiwot et al., 2011.WQI were in the range of good category (63.45-87.35) in summer and winter seasons at each site and in the range of poor category in monsoon season almost at all the three sites.

Abstract: The data on the analysis of various antioxidant enzymes were studied at the sub cellular level in the gill and brain of fish, Cyprinus carpio at 7th and 15th days of exposure to sub lethal concentration of acidic media (pH5.0) besides controls, are presented in Tables 1 and 2. The superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione-s-transferase (GST) activities increased at day 7 and 15 in the gill and brain of experimental fish with a corresponding decrease in the activities of catalase and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) of experimental fish over control. The percent change in the SOD and GST of experimental fish was increased in both the organs at day 15. But the degree of increase was more with the duration of experimentation. In between the two organs the SOD activity was greater in brain than the gill of fish. In contrast to that the percent change of catalase and GPx activities of experimental fish was increased in gill at day 7 and at day 15 and also same trend was observed in the brain of experimental fish at both days over the control fish. In between the two organs the catalase and GPx activities was more in gill than the brain of fish. But the degree of decrease was more with increased the duration of experimentation. It suggest that the effect of acidic pH might have been caused oxidative damage in the gill and brain of fish and also the severity o damage was more with increase the duration of experimentation and tissue specificity.
