Commercial Woodfuel Supply, Distribution and Use in Cebu, the Philippines

Field Document No.42, July 1993

Table of Contents

This document describes the marketing of fuelwood and charcoal on the island of Cebu in the Philippines. In the introduction, an overview is given of the wood energy situation on Cebu. The demand of wood energy in the city of Cebu is assessed for the household and commercial sectors. The commercial sector is subdivided into different fuel consuming establishments. A description is given of their daily consumption rate, fuel quality requirements and the combustion systems used.

The section on the woodfuel supply and distribution system describes the flow of woodfuels from land use systems to urban and rural markets. In this part, attention is drawn to the harvesting and conservation practices, as well as marketing and transport. The problems of trade and the future prospects for woodfuel use are outlined. Some calculations of incomes of the various actors in the marketing chain are presented with examples. Why more initiatives on the supply and demand-side are needed is explained in the section on policy and research issues. The appendix presents the methodologies for woodfuel flow studies and the survey instruments used.
