Abstract

Abstract: In statistically designed experiment taken up during the 1972 at the spacement of 4m x 4m, Pinus caribaea (Bahammensis), P. elliotti (USA), P. roxburghii (up), P. caribaea (Mangua) were planted. Growth rating (girth and height) is P. caribaea (mangua) > P. caribaea (Bahamensis) > P. patula (Newzealland) > P. roxburghii (up) > P. elliotti (USA). Where as when planted at 2.5m x 2.5m spacement, performence varied i.e. P. caribaea (mangua) > P. caribaea (Oxon-Andros) > P. caribaea (Bahamensis) > P. roxburghii (up) > P. elliotti (USA) both in terms of girth and height. However, the difference between the species was not significant. Comparison of grown between plantations of P. caribaea (Bahamensis), P. elliotti (USA), P. roxburghii (up), P. caribaea (Mangua) and P. patula (Newzealand) planted at the spacement of 4m x 4m with that at the spacement of 2.5m x 2.5m,shows no significant difference either in girthor height of any of the species at these spacements after 20myears, i.e in 1992. In 1973, P. caribaea (mangua), P. caribaea (mangua) P. caribaea (Oxon-Andros), P. caribaea (Bahamensis), P. patula (Newzaeland), P. keysia (shillong) and P. keysia (philippines) were planted in a statistical design at the spcement of 2.5m x 2.5m, performance was in the order P. caribaea (mangua) > P. caribaea (OxonAndros ) > P. caribaea (Bahamensis) > P. patula (Newzaeland) > P. keysia (shillong) > P. keysia (philippines) interms of girth and P. caribaea (mangua) > P. caribaea (Oxon-Andros) > P. caribaea (Bahamensis) > P. patula (Newzaeland) > P. keysia (shillong) in height. On comparing the performence of P. patula, P. roxburghii, P. caribea and P. elliotti planted in1973, P. caribaea shown better growth. In 1979, out of 5 species , viz, P. patula, P. caribaea (FRI-505), P. cribaea (FRI-500). P. caribaea and P. elliotti, planted the order of performanec was: P. patula > P. elliotti > P. cribaea (FRI-500) > P. cribaea (FRI-505) and P. cribaea in girth, P. cribaea (FRI-500) > P. patula > P. elliotti > P. cribaea (FRI-505) and P. cribaea in height. Performence of tropical pines when compared to natural tree crop coming up subsequent to laterisation is much better. Appropriate selection of species and procedures will therefore, go long way in increasing productivity.
