Abstract

Abstract: Small litter fall was collected at monthly intervals for 2 years from traps in four rain forests in Karnataka, India. The range of mean annual total small litter fall was (in t ha-1yr-1) 3.44 - 4.18 and that for leaf litter fall was 2.88 - 3.60. These are the lowest values recorded from evergreen tropical forest large stature. All the sites expect one had a season litterfall with high weights during the dry season. The chemical composition of litterfall showed large difference between sites, particuarly in phosphorous concentration which was very high in samples from two sites, Magnesium concentration was generally high and samples form two site shad highest concentration of this element recorded form tropical litterfall.
