Abstract

Floristically, Western Ghats region is one of the biologically richest area in India harboring not less than 3500 species of flowering plants consisting of about 27% flowering plants in the country. There is an equal proportion of lower plants as well. The Western Ghats are the most important distribution range many plants at family and generic level, and extremely restricted in their distribution. The Western Ghats harbors a healthy population of most of the animal species of peninsular India. It also exhibits a fairly good degree of endemism amongst mammals. The Western Ghats plant and animal species may be a potential source of dyes and drugs and also a gene pool for the pest resistant variety of plants. The multi utility values of its genetic resources may further be revealed on the field of genetic engineering.
