Abstract

This paper is continuation of several by the senior author (H.s) published in this journal in the last few years (see J.B.N.H.S 50:305-312;428-430;etc). In our feild work in the Krishnagiri National Park Borivli.Salsette Island, we have found a plant that has given us plenty of trouble before we could come to definite conclusion as to identify. Finally after a detailed study of the pertinent literature on the subject, we have come to conclusion that our plant is identical with the one listed by Cooke on his Flora of the Presidency of Bombay under the name Aneilema scapiflorum Wight .The main reason for difficulty in identifying the plant were that neither Wight nor Clarke describe the root system of the plant, and Cooke only, mentions that the root possess pisiform tubers; further the diagrams shown by Wight and Clarke picture a juvenile specimen, and their discriptions refer to the same undeveloped plant; the picture given by Royle has not been seen.
