Environmental Information
System ENVIS centre was
established at this Institute, in the area of environmental information
relating to solid waste including hazardous waste, as a network partner in
the Environmental Information System(ENVIS), with the focal point at the
MoEF, New Delhi.
The ENVIS centre,
in association with the MoEF and other ENVIS centres, is targeted to build
up a repository of information and its dissemination centre in solid and
toxic waste managements. The objectives of the Centre are to provide
national environmental information service relevant to present and future
needs of the users, originators, processors and disseminators of
information; to build up storage, retrieval and dissemination
capabilities. Total number of queries received and processed by this
centre during 2000 - 2001 are 187.
The activity
highlights of the centre include information resource development,
bibliographic information organisation, information consolidation and
repackaging dissemination. A Newsletter was published in December, 2000
highlighting the issues related to setting of risk based remediation goal,
amendment Rules (2000) related to hazardous waste management and handling
and municipal solid waste management and handling rules. Apart from
publishing regular features such as research and development and news and
views, this issue contains a table linking 44 hazardous waste generating
processes listed in the schedule 1 of the Amended Rules, 2000 with
erstwhile 18 categories of hazardous wastes documented in the Rules of
1989.
The ENVIS centre
on June 05, 2000 released at NEERI, Nagpur a document entitled "State of
Hazardous Waste Management in India", at the hands of Er. Paritosh Tyagi,
Ex-Chairman, Centre Pollution Control Board, New Delhi.
