Environmental Information System

ENVIS centre was established at this Institute, in the area of environmental information relating to solid waste including hazardous waste, as a network partner in the Environmental Information System(ENVIS), with the focal point at the MoEF, New Delhi.

The ENVIS centre, in association with the MoEF and other ENVIS centres, is targeted to build up a repository of information and its dissemination centre in solid and toxic waste managements. The objectives of the Centre are to provide national environmental information service relevant to present and future needs of the users, originators, processors and disseminators of information; to build up storage, retrieval and dissemination capabilities. Total number of queries received and processed by this centre during 2000 - 2001 are 187.

The activity highlights of the centre include information resource development, bibliographic information organisation, information consolidation and repackaging dissemination. A Newsletter was published in December, 2000 highlighting the issues related to setting of risk based remediation goal, amendment Rules (2000) related to hazardous waste management and handling and municipal solid waste management and handling rules. Apart from publishing regular features such as research and development and news and views, this issue contains a table linking 44 hazardous waste generating processes listed in the schedule 1 of the Amended Rules, 2000 with erstwhile 18 categories of hazardous wastes documented in the Rules of 1989.

The ENVIS centre on June 05, 2000 released at NEERI, Nagpur a document entitled "State of Hazardous Waste Management in India", at the hands of Er. Paritosh Tyagi, Ex-Chairman, Centre Pollution Control Board, New Delhi.
