Advanced Research Workshops (ARWs) and Advanced Study Institutes (ASIs) t

Further meetings will be supported during the year, and information on th ese meetings will be available at the web site. Although the site is con tinuously updated there will be major postings in mid-April and mid-July (check Latest News' for details), at which time circulation will also be made to "NATOSCI" subscribers. Meetings are also posted on the NATO gop her.

This Calendar will be provided to the "NATOSCI" distribution list in two separate messages. The Advanced Research Workshops may be found below. The Advanced Study Institutes will be listed in the following message.

Advanced Research Workshops (ARWs) are working meetings of about four day s' duration, where scientists and engineers researching at the frontiers of a subject are able to engage in an intense but informal exchange of vi ews, aiming at a critical assessment of existing knowledge and identifica tion of directions for future action. Attendance at ARWs is mainly by in vitation, but a few places are available for particularly well-qualified scientists of all nationalities upon application to the contact person li sted below.

The NATO Science Programme provides assistance for scientific collaborati on between NATO-country scientists and between NATO-country scientists an d scientists in Cooperation Partner (CP) countries (the Commonwealth of I ndependent States and countries of Central and Eastern Europe). 20

Support is available for collaboration between NATO-country scientists in any scientific area for Collaborative Research Grants, or to organize Ad vanced Study Institutes. Support for collaboration between NATO-country and CP-country scientists is PRIMARILY BUT NOT EXCLUSIVELY IN THE PRIORIT Y AREAS outlined below. The possibilities of support for collaboration b etween NATO and CP-country scientists are for Collaborative Research Gra nts, Linkage Grants, Expert Visit Grants, and grants to organize Advanced Research Workshops and Advanced Study Institutes. 20

PRIORITY AREAS

DISARMAMENT TECHNOLOGIES : Scientific questions related to nuclear, biolo gical, chemical and conventional weapons disarmament and non-proliferatio n efforts, in the pursuit of dismantlement, destruction and conversion ac tivities in an effective and environmentally sound manner.

ENVIRONMENTAL SECURITY: Scientific problems related to environmental secu rity including the reclamation of contaminated military sites, regional e nvironmental problems and natural and man-made disasters; affordable clea nup technologies are of particular interest.

HIGH TECHNOLOGY : Scientific problems related to high technology includin g information science, materials science, biotechnology and energy conser vation and supply (non-nuclear).

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY POLICY : Problems related to science policy, techn ology transfer, innovation, management, intellectual property rights and career mobility (e.g. redeployment of defence-industry scientists).

COMPUTER NETWORKING : In dealing with these priority areas Computer Netwo rking should be used to the fullest extent possible. Computer networking supplements are therefore available for CP country teams awarded NATO Li nkage Grants. Networking Infrastructure Grants are also available, to au gment the regional computer networking infrastructure of the academic com munity in Cooperation Partner countries.

Further information and application forms for the activities noted above are available at the NATO science web site - address:
