Integrated Bio-Systems Mailing List
*********************************************************************
welcome to ibs-gen@msias.ias.unu.edu
Dear Subscribers
I am pleased to write to you via IBS-GEN@MSIAS.IAS.UNU.EDU - the new site
for the Integrated Bio-Systems mailing list.
All of you have received the "Usage guidelines for IBS-GEN" as well as the
notification message from the L-Soft Listserver at UNU/IAS which also
provides some information and directions on how to use and obtain more
information about using LISTSERV mailing lists. If you have any questions
regarding the use of LISTSERV commands, please feel free to write to me
(foo@ias.unu.edu).
I am now preparing the mailing list on IBS for beer breweries and creating
a new group for IBS for coffee industry. These will enable more in-depth
discussions on how integrated bio-systems can be designed to convert
unsustainable industrial processes into productive and environmentally
sound activities. There are future opportunities for electronic networking
and information exchange on other agro-industries and I hope that we will
be able to create lists for these industries with the assistance of some of
you. Please contact me if you can help.
best regards,
Mr. Eng-Leong Foo, Institute of Advanced Studies, United Nations Univ.
Tokyo. Email: foo@ias.unu.edu

The Zero Emissions Research Initiative
The Zero Emissions Research Initiative (ZERI) was founded at the UNU in
1994 on the hypothesis that, in order to achieve environmentally
sustainable development, industries must maximize the use of available raw
materials and utilize their own wastes and by-products to the fullest
extent possible so as to eliminate all emissions into the air, water, and
soil. The UNU/ZERI project searches for creative solutions to convert all
wastes and under-utilized resources from industries into value-added
products, thus creating production processes which are more energy- and
resource-efficient and establishing new environmentally sustainable
industries. In addition, it searches for industrial clustering setups
conducive to establishing closed cycles of materials and products.
UNU/ZERI reassesses the corporate role in meeting the challenges of
sustainable development and has already concluded, on the basis of its
industrial clustering model, that what is normally considered waste output
from one industry can be used as a key input for another industry. The
ultimate objective of the project is to achieve zero industrial
emissions.
The UNU/ZERI project is envisaged as a ten-year programme of training,
research, and pilot scale projects of industry clusters. The research
programme involves a multidisciplinary study of systems and new
technologies which can convert industrial wastes into zero emissions
activities. Research focuses on what are considered to be four central
components of zero emissions industries:
(i) integrated biosystems;
(ii) materials separation technologies;
(iii) molecular design and re-engineering; and
(iv) zero emissions systems design.
Each area involves
the closure of waste loops, the organization of local training and the
improvement of research capabilities, the establishment of international
multidisciplinary networks of experts from relevant fields, and the use of
project sites for demonstrations, training, and the further development of
projects with other agencies.

To subscribers of unu.zeri.ibs@caren.net
As the host site at the Science University of Technology is closing down, I
have moved this list to the host site of Institute of Advanced Studies,
United Nations University, Tokyo. The list now uses L-Soft's LISTSERV, a
popular mail distribution list software that services some 3 million people
in the world from different sites.
Users new to the use of L-Soft's LISTSERV are encouraged to read the online
files LISTSERV REFCARD and LISTSERV GENINTRO, which can be obtained by
sending the following commands in the body of a mail message to
LISTSERV@MSIAS.IAS.UNU.EDU

Thank you for your continued interest in the list and for the information
and support you have given to the list. I look forward to your
participation at IBS-GEN@MSIAS.IAS.UNU.EDU
