British Researchers Report Influence of Humans on Atmosphere
Since 1961. Daily Environment Report, November 15, 1996, pA-1.
A study published in the journal Science November 15 reports
researchers in Britain have traced the influence of humans on the
vertical temperature profile.
The temperature of the atmosphere generally declines with
elevation in the lower atmosphere (troposphere) while it rises in
the higher atmosphere (stratosphere). The warming in the
stratosphere is attributed to the absorption of ultraviolet rays
by ozone.
Researchers at the U.K. Meteorological Office and the
Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Chilton, England found
stratospheric cooling, due to ozone depletion, and tropospheric
warming, because of increased levels of greenhouse gases. They
analyzed vertical temperature profile data collected from 1961 to
1996.
"Our results support the hypothesis of an anthropogenic
effect on atmospheric vertical temperature structure...since
1961," said the study.
The researchers added that some scientific uncertainties
such as natural variability of the climate, errors in observation
and incomplete understanding of the influence of greenhouse gases
on the climate could affect their conclusions.
