Fellow conservationists, A few days ago I posted a message encouraging recipients to join the U.S. Society for Ecological Economics (USSEE), which is considering a position on economic growth. Naturally, people have asked, ^ÓWhat would such a position look like?^Ô Therefore, I have posted a template position for scientific institutions, professional societies, and conservation NGOs to consider: http://www.homestead.com/prosites-brianczech/PositiononEG.html I believe this template position includes the key elements necessary for a desirable paradigm shift in the environmental and economic policy arenas. Such a shift will not occur, however, unless the conservation community develops solidarity on the issue. Please circulate this message among other conservation listservers. I belong only to the TWS and ESA listservers, though I am joining the American Fisheries Society to help advance a position on economic growth. Thank you for your consideration, Brian Czech Arlington, VA USA ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Jun 2003 16:44:08 -0700 From: Ashwani Vasishth <vasishth@USC.EDU> Subject: News: World Environment Day, June 5 (fwd) World Environment Day 5 June [pdf] http://www.unep.org/wed/2003/ This Web site introduces the United Nations Environment Programme's World Environment Day (WED), hosted this year in Beirut. World Environment Day is "one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action." This year's theme is "Water -- Two Billion People are Dying for It." Features available on the Web site include downloadable informational material, descriptions of WED events planned around the world, a fantastic collection of water-related photos from UNEP's International Photographic Competition, and much more. The site also includes a quiz where users can test their understanding of water resources and responsible water usage. Also available in Arabic, French, and Spanish.
