Here's a handy method that works well. It is tricky to explain but easy once
you've done it. Just make your column or other graph first (without
highlighting any of the stn error data, then dbl click on the series you
want to add error bars to...each bar of that series (not one bar) should be
highlighted. Then select y-error bars from the dialog box, then custom. Then
with the dialog box open but say to the side of your spreadsheet (you can
move the dialog box around without closing it by dragging it from the top
bar/edge of the box) go to a separate column in your spreadsheet in which
you have already entered the standard errors...highlight these numbers (i.e.
if you have 3 hist. bars in that series or three points, there should be
three se's in the same rows as each of those bars/points); the highlighted
cells will then appear in your custom area of the diaglog box--hit
return/ok and they should appear correctly on your graph. To do a second
series, repeat the procedure...It usually works great. Also---if you search
on the web for graphing/stats suggestions on excel, there are some good
sites out there, including one that outlines how to compute standard errors
in Excel stats--which is definitely not so obvious as computing stn.
deviations in excel.. Mostly I use SPSS to compute all my numbers, excel to
graph them.

Graduate Research in Freshwater Algal Ecology - Fall 2002

Two graduate assistantships (M.S. or Ph.D.) will be available starting Fall
2003 to work on research projects concerning freshwater benthic algae in
streams. The first project will investigate the nutritional importance of
benthic algae in stream food webs, using biochemical and stoichiometric
markers. The second project is expected to focus on the biogeography and
molecular systematics of freshwater brown algae (Phaeophyceae). Both
projects will employ field and laboratory approaches. Prospective students
should have experience in algal culture, molecular techniques, and/or
freshwater ecology.

Funding will be provided either as Research or Teaching assistantships,
depending on availability of funds (T.A.-ships are funded) and student
background. The work will be based at the Louis Calder Center - Biological
Field Station of Fordham University. We have well equipped laboratories
with a range of analytical, aquatic ecology, algal culture, molecular and
microscopy equipment available for these projects. Details of the station
can be found at: http://www.fordham.edu/calder_center .
- Stipends will range between $15,000 to $17,000 per year, plus full tuition
remission.

- For any questions, please contact me by email (wehr@fordham.edu) or by
writing: Dr. John D. Wehr, Louis Calder Center - Biological Station, Fordham
University, PO Box 887, Armonk, NY USA 10504.

Subject: Please post Fellowship Announcement

To the Ecological Society of America listserv moderator--I would be most
grateful if you could post the following announcement of a new student
fellowship opportunity on your ecolog-l listserv. The text follows:

National Science Foundation/New England Wild Flower Society
Research Fellowship Program in Conservation Biology

The New England Wild Flower Society (NEWFS) has been awarded a National
Science Foundation grant to support three students to perform basic
scientific research addressing species of conservation concern throughout
New England during summer 2003.

We seek research proposals from advanced undergraduate or early graduate
students who have demonstrated potential for completing outstanding
research in biology. These proposals must address one or more species of
rare plant taxa for which we have completed Research and Conservation
Plans, and be designed to provide data on critical aspects of the life
history and ecology of these species. These data are central to devising
sound conservation strategies. Thus, in completing a project, the Fellow
will generate useful, publishable information and gain excellent
experience in all phases of biological research. Three Fellows
successfully completed research projects on rare plant taxa in summer
2002, studying pollination, reproduction, herbivory, population genetics,
and seed dispersal and yielding new data that are critical to
conservation.

These prestigious fellowships will provide generous stipends ($3750) for
the 2003 field season, plus support ($250) for Fellows to prepare and
present their findings at a New England Wild Flower Society Research
Roundtable in September 2003. Certain research-related equipment will
also be available for use by Fellows. Individual assistance in
experimental design, data analysis and preparation of results for
publication will be provided by Dr. Elizabeth Farnsworth, Biologist at
NEWFS.

Applications for these fellowships are due 5 February 2003, and complete
guidelines are available at http://www.newfs.org/nsfannounce.htm. Contact
Elizabeth Farnsworth (508) 877-7630 x 3207 or efarnswo@mtholyoke.edu for
more information.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you require further
information. Thank you very much,

Yes, though it's a bit hard to describe in words. You need to
construct a new series for the error bars. If, for example, you want
to show +/- one StdDev, use Excel's function to calculate the
standard deviations for each bar, and put them into a series parallel
to the data. Then use the plus/minus error bar option, setting its
range to the StdDev series.
I'm working from memory, so I may not have the steps exactly right,
but hopefully that will get you started on the right track.

I am having trouble with error bars on bargraphs for Excel on a Mac.
When I select
"custom" Excel puts the same error bars on each histogram, even when
I construct
the figure by adding data sets one by one. Can anyone help me?

The USDA, Agricultural Research Service, Ft. Detrick (Frederick) MD,
is seeking a POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH ASSOCIATE, (Plant Population
Biologist-Weeds). A recent Ph.D. in plant ecology, plant population
biology, botany, weed science or plant molecular biology is required.
Salary is commensurate with experience ($46,469-$72,400).

The incumbent will study the genetic diversity and geographic origins
of the invasive weed, yellow starthistle (Centaurea solstitialis L.).
The objectives of the research are to 1) Use DNA fragment pattern
analysis and sequencing of Mediterranean, Eurasian and U.S. YST
populations to identify the origins and estimate the genetic
complexity of U.S. YST populations; and 2) Identify YST molecular
markers associated with susceptibility and resistance of U.S. YST to
biocontrol pathogens.

Experience with nucleotide fragment analysis (microsatellite, RAPD,
AFLP or RFLP), Polymerase Chain Reaction, and DNA sequencing is
required, and knowledge of techniques for phylogenetic analysis of
molecular data and comparative alignment of nucleotide sequence is
desirable.

Portions of the Research will be performed in a biocontainment
facility. Appointment is contingent upon the applicant's successful
completion of a pre-employment suitability determination.
