ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST REGISTER - There are a number of individuals who have submitted titles but have not registered. IF YOU ARE GIVING A TALK OR A POSTER YOU MUST REGISTER. * The early registration deadline for the 2001 SSE/ASN/SSB annual meetings in Knoxville, TN is NOW - March 31, 2001. (go to http://fp.bio.utk.edu/sse2001/ for general information, registration, and title submission forms) * The deadline for title submission for all oral and poster presentations is March, 31 2001 - no titles will be accepted after that date. * If you are submitting a title you will still have to register for the meetings using a separate form. Use the "registration" link from the main page to look at the housing and meal plan options and to register. * We are offering a number of cool outings this year (check "Tours and Excursions" from the Registration link), but these won't go unless we get enough takers. If you want to go on one or more of the excursions it's advisable to coop some friends to help make sure we reach the minimum numbers. Scheduled tours include: Tennessee Aquarium & I-Max Theater in Chattanooga- (One of the world's largest freshwater aquariums) Fossil Cave Crawl @ Raccoon Mountain Overnight Cave Expedition @ Raccoon Mountain Scopes Trial Museum & Courthouse- (Yes, it really happened and not too far from here either) Museum of Science and Energy Museum of Appalachia Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies & National Park ATBI Talk Big South Fork National Recreation Area and Fossil Site Tour * Check http://fp.bio.utk.edu/sse2001/tours.htm for descriptions and additional information. * General information and links to the registration and title submission pages can be found at http://fp.bio.utk.edu/sse2001/ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Mar 2001 10:25:26 -0500 From: "Manuel A. Morales" <morales@WAM.UMD.EDU> Subject: laser rangefinder: summaries I didn't get any responses regarding the Leica DISTO rangefinders, so I'll go ahead and purchase one and report back. The models range in price from $395 for a discontinued model (accuracy +/- 3mm) to $995 for the top-of-the-line model (+/- 1.5 mm). All models have a range of up to 100 m and can be fitted with an optional telescopic viewfinder for outdoors use. The URL for more info is: http://www.leica-geosystems.com/surveying/product/distancers/distohome.htm Below are the responses I did receive: I have used the Sonin Combo Pro w/ electric target (runs around $132 in Forestry Suppliers catalog). I used it to map boundaries of my temporary wetland pools in the field as they dried up. With the target, it is very quick and easy to use and I was very comfortable with the accuracy of the measurements for my use. It was recommended to me by one of my committee members - he also had used it to map out wetland floodplain areas and thought it worked out great. Although I didn't have any problems, I think that in very windy, open conditions you might run into some problems getting a reading. Also, I don't know how great it is for long distances ... mine were shorter (up to 25 meters) - I was pleased with it's performance. I've used similar products for mapping tree locations for my M.Sc. thesis, they are generally very accurate, with some caveats that you need to consider. If you are working in forested ecosystems (or any plant community with relatively tall vegetation), your ability to use the laser rangefinder will be severely limited by your line of sight. Leaves and stems from tall shrubs or trees can interrupt the beam of the laser and give wildly inaccurate results. However, if you're working in a prairie or old field or something, you shouldn't have any problem, and the laser rangefinders really are accurate down to a few centimeters. Having said that, two summers ago I used an old fashioned field mapping station ("theodolite"), which used simple optics to determine distance from a base station to a measuring pole held by my assistant, and I was able to work just as quickly as a colleague who was using the latest in laser-rangefinder equipped survey equipment, with the additional bonus that I could work in forests where tall shrubs were obscuring the laser, and that I saved several thousand dollars by not having to purchase the whizzy laser system. You can rent these kinds of products for the length of a field season for a fraction of what it costs to purchase them new. Try a forestry or survey equipment supply house. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Mar 2001 10:35:42 -0500 From: "E. Contrary to what one may believe, the practice of working outside a scope-of-services is probably more common than one realizes. The whole contracting process is rife with poor communication amongst the parties involved, most seriously between the agency's contract administrator and project manager or supervisor. And, no, the project manager (probably a career federal employee) was probably not discharged and can not be discharged out-of-hand. Federal employees are protected by federal hiring practices. (See my previous post regarding contract clauses.) In all likelihood, the project manager received a warning and less-than-glowing performance evaluation. Compounding matters, the project manager is now short an 'employee' s/he desperately needs to do everything s/he has been assigned, including the original contract work. No one directly involved wins - the subcontracted employee is taken off the project and may not have a job, the prime contractor suffers the potential consequence of losing existing or future contracts, the agency doesn't get the product on time or within budget, and the project manager is left shorthanded. Regardless of the circumstances leading up to this point, in the end this a sure-fire recipe for shoddy work. >If Mr. Thomas wants to put a map he feels important onto his own >private website he can, but he just can't do it on the govt's website. FALSE. The researcher / employee / contractor does NOT own or have rights to the information collected, processed, analyzed, etc. etc, public or private. Period. If one posts it, publishes it, releases it, leaks it, etc., in any way it's considered theft and you may be subject to prosecution. Resuming lurk-mode....... Ann E. I would like to thank everyone who replied to my plea for help, regarding the exclusion of bats from buildings. I received many emails and feel confident that this situation will end on a positive note. I have provided the decision-makers with the best possible information, thanks to you all. The general consensus was to contact Bat Conservation International at www.batcon.org. Their web site was quite informative and described exclusion methods mentioned by many individuals. We are concerned with taking care of this matter in a way that is least detrimental to the bats. Thanks again, Debbie __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? However, you need to make sure that you do not exclude the bats from their current home during their breeding season or the young may starve. Wait until the bats leave the building at dusk to feed and block any entrances that they might be getting in through. You may want to consult professional help to do this so you are sure that all of the crevices are sealed. Bats can get in through some amazingly small spaces. Some companies can even install a one-way door for them so they can leave, but not re-enter. If you have made bat boxes available (contact Bat Conservation International about designs/sources for good boxes--some commercially available ones are terrible) you may find that they use them or they may find another home. I hope this helps. -Heather --- Debbie Brewer <dabbrewer@YAHOO.COM> wrote: > Does anyone out there know how to translocate bats? > We have bats roosting in a high traffic building and > they have been identified as being undesirable. During March 110 new links were added. This latest addition brings you 15 new conferences, 20 training courses and a network. Go: http://www.sd-online.net NEW SD ONLINE URL (WWW ADDRESS) Please change your book marks to http://www.sd-online.net to access SD ONLI E. The old URL ( http://susdev.eurofound.ie ) works for the moment. WEBSITE DEVELOPMENT: SD-ONLINE is designed and developed by EDEN B.V. on behalf of the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions (an autonomous publicly funded agency of the European Union). Learn more about EDEN's database driven websites and how EDEN can help you. This individual (Bush) seems to be living 40 years ago. Is ESA preparing an organized response to deal with his wish to destruct everything that is still left out there (including our hopes for a better world for our children)? I hope that history will nor say that "only 537 votes made the difference between slow, but continuous, environmental progress and progressive devastation".
