We are looking for an enthusiastic student to take an active role in an experiment examining how continued human disturbance to the global carbon and nitrogen cycles will increase the success of biological invasions in the future. This project will give a student the opportunity to become involved first-hand in a large-scale ecological experiment, as well as developing their skills and knowledge of community and ecosystem ecology, biological diversity, global environmental change, and biological invasions. Ecological Research at CPB and Silwood Park CPB's purpose is to study ecological processes in plant and animal populations, and to understand how multi-species communities are assembled. The Centre conducts forefront academic research, employing and promoting a range of relevant scientific disciplines. It provides a world-class contribution to the understanding of how ecosystems function, a knowledge required for the rational management of national and global environmental problems. Silwood Park is Imperial College's science park and field research station, located near Ascot, Berkshire (the main university campus is at South Kensington, in London). A pleasant country manor estate, Silwood houses part of the Biology Department, the CPB, CABI Biosciences, a library, a computer centre, and various other laboratory and field experimental facilities. It is an internationally renowned centre for teaching and research in ecological sciences, and hosts a lively programme of seminars and international visitors. Applications We are looking for students with a good academic track-record who are currently enrolled in an ecology/biology undergraduate programme. Interested students should write by 1 June 2001 (but preferably sooner), explaining their academic interests and motivation, and enclosing a CV. Applications should be addressed to Dr G Dawkins, Manager, Centre for Population Biology, Imperial College at Silwood Park, Ascot, Berks, SL5 7PY, UK. Further information can obtained by email from Dr G Dawkins (g.dawkins@ic.ac.uk, for general inquiries) and Dr S Catovsky(s.catovsky@ic.ac.uk, for project details), or on the World Wide Web (http://forest.bio.ic.ac.uk/cpb/cpb/cpbintro.html). ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Mar 2001 12:02:14 -0600 From: James English <jjengli@UARK.EDU> Subject: question Got a question. I'm involved in a wonderful seminar course where we discuss each decade of the last century with regards to major ecological papers, ideas, technology etc. As you can imagine, more recent decades are more difficult to get a handle on than decades where we've had the luxury of time to settle out what would become important. My question is a request. Would any of you please respond to me (although it might spark fun if you responded to the group) papers (with as complete citing as you care to give), people, ideas and inventions etc. that you feel were major players during the 1990's at shaping or directing or defining ecology during that decade. Predict, if you will, what the future will say about the 1990's, or what already sticks out as important. Also, if you would, specify what branch of ecology you are from and feel free to choose specific people and papers that were important to your field rather than ecology at large. Thanks much. I would pose this question - what about terrestrial (and aquatic) food web considerations? Aren't arthropods and other herbivorous organisms going to feed on those plants, thereby mobilizing contaminants to higher trophic levels? Contaminants are not locked into these plants, but simply bioaccumulated by them. This consideration has been largely ignored by people involved with the use of constructed wetlands, where plants such as cattails and other hyperaccumulating species are planted solely for the purpose of removing certain toxicants from a wastewater stream. Plants loaded up with contaminants potentially could be a significant problem to terrestrial (and aquatic) wildlife species under many circumstances. In addition to this, one of the major side benefits given for building constructed wetlands is to attract wildlife species, and it is not uncommon for people to put out nest boxes and other wildlife attractants in constructed wetland areas. So, you have a situation where wildlife species are actively being attracted to wetland areas containing plants that have been bioaccumulating contaminants. If you want a good example of the hazards of plants bioaccumulating high levels of a toxic compound on wildlife species, just look to the situation with selenium at Kesterson National Wildlife Refuge in California. Selenium bioaccumulated in plants caused all sorts of lethal and sublethal effects to terrestrial and aquatic wildlife species, particularly aquatic birds. So, the recent discovery of the arsenic-accumulating fern and other hyperaccumulating plants is interesting - just don't leave them out in the environment long enough to where they can enter food webs and cause toxicity problems. They are missing an important point. All those metals don't disappear when they are phytoremediated. They are simply bioconcentrated in the vegetation. You still have the problem of deal with heavy metal rich vegetation when it dies.
