First GIS Day 2003 Proclamation
Congratulations to Jo Anne Manley, GIS Coordinator for the City of
Monroe, North Carolina who recently obtained the first GIS Day 2003
Proclamation. The GIS Day Committee will be sending Jo Anne a special GIS
Day 5th Anniversary commemorative t-shirt to thank her for her efforts.
The city has hosted GIS Day events in the past, but this is the first
year that they have asked the Mayor to sign an official proclamation
making November 19, 2003, "GIS Day" in the City of Monroe, North
Carolina. Thanks Jo Anne and the City of Monroe!

Official GIS Day Proclamations
Ask your Governor, Mayor, or other public official to declare November
19, 2003, as GIS Day in your City or State. Example letters and templates
are available online at http://www.gisday.com/material.html#declaration.

GIS Day Gear Available Online
Celebrate GIS Day 2003 with a special commemorative 5th Anniversary
T-Shirt! Look for these and other items including pencils, stickers,
hats, and polo shirts online in the ESRI Store. These items make great
game or door prizes and can help to make your event even more memorable.

This Month's Featured Event
Members of the Lancaster County GIS Division are planning an entire week
of GIS Day events. They will give presentations at local schools and
establish an "adopt a class" program where GIS professionals will help
teachers to integrate GIS into their curriculum. Training sessions for
municipalities and watershed groups will take place mid-week, with an
open house, tour, and map gallery open to the public.

Look for ways that you can help organize similar events in your
community!

ESRI's Lewis & Clark Web Site
In honor of the 200th anniversary of the Lewis & Clark expedition, ESRI
has developed a Web site (http://www.esri.com/lewisandclark), which
provides visitors with opportunities to learn about the 1803-1806 journey
and how geographic technology and techniques have changed in 200 years.
The site provides an overview of mapping technology through time,
classroom learning guides, links to historic maps, GIS data sources, as
well as links to additional Lewis and Clark web sites. These interesting
resources might help to provide ideas and activities for your events.

New Book from ESRI Press
Community Geography and Community Geography Teacher's Guide: Community
Geography: GIS in Action is a great guide for middle and high school
students and active citizens wanting to use GIS to make a difference in
their communities. Each module in the workbook contains a case study, an
intermediate-level GIS exercise, and a section with ideas and tips about
how to transfer the GIS and community problem-solving skills to other
locations. The Teacher's Guide materials correlate the GIS exercises to
national geography, science, and technology standards, and include a
lesson overview, estimated completion time, required materials, plus
standards-based rubrics and answer keys enable teachers to effectively
evaluate student work.

What a great tool to help you plan a GIS Day 2003 community project!
