Paul Harris wrote (private email) >My reservation was more along the lines of "does it fit with >waste water treatment" rather than "is it a workshop or a >conference" and I just fired off my first thoughts to test the ideas >- your suggested topic is a big improvement. >Are you looking for multiple papers - in which case >would one on "dry" digestion be appropriate? Here are some categories of IBSnet activities (based on my experience) that volunteers can organize (and of course giving consideration to the theme of the choosen activity should have some focus on integration of the technology discussed). Other variations in the categories are of course welcomed. I may have used and mixed up such terms in my earlier years but the categories have become more clear to me now. (a) E-Seminar Usually with one or more papers and the discussion with the same author (just like a conventional physical seminar and the author may distribute one or more papers as the background materials for discusion). Anyone can join and the seminar will be educational and can lead to intellectual discussion. E-seminar usually run for 2 to 3 weeks. (b) E-Forum Usually with an announced topic for discussion and invite people to public discussion. Target group will be people who are familiar with the topic and discussion can be highly intellectual but also risk chit-chat status where participants may ask basic questions without reading any background materials. (c) E-Workshop Usually with well-defined purpose like an E-forum but it is often moderated towards highly intellectual discussion. Background materials are essential (e.g. multiple papers on the topic from different authors). Such an activity is usually productive and can lead to joint project proposals, task force, etc. E-Forum and E-Workshop may run for 1-2 months month. It could also be called an E-Seminar/Workshop where you have multiple papers of a specific topic. (d) E-Conference This will be a full scale conference with several papers for virtual presentations and discussion. May run for several months. It can also be a post-conference activity after a face-to-face conference has been held. (e) E-Extension of a face-to-face Conference This activity extends a face-to-face conf., (or meeting, symposium) online and makes abstracts/papers available at the same time as when the face-to-face event is happening. E-seminars and E-workshops are easy to organize and can be handled by one volunteer.
