From: Barbara DorseySubject: USGS Earth Sciences Intern, Project #00673, St. Petersburg, FL U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY EARTH SCIENCES INTERNSHIP PROGRAM PLEASE NOTE: Application is restricted to students who have not been out of school for more than one year. Non-citizens are eligible only if they have attended or graduated from a U.S. college or university during the past year and have a visa that allows them to receive a stipend. (U.S. citizens attending foreign schools are eligible for the program). Current or former employees of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) are not eligible. Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) administers internship opportunities for USGS. All potential applicants should direct any questions to ORAU rather than the USGS. ORAU contacts are listed on the information sheet following the project description. Project Description for EARTH SCIENCES INTERN -- St. Petersburg, Florida -- Project Number 000673 DESCRIPTION/TITLE OF PROJECT: This project seeks to explain the documented evolution of the Washington coastline through application of regional wave models and analysis of long-term wave data. Shorter-term hydrodynamic data (waves, currents, sea-level) will also be collected and analyzed to address specific processes and the evolution of local features. DEADLINE TO APPLY: August 18, 1998 OBJECTIVES: The intern will work with permanent research staff of the USGS and the university cooperators to implement methodologies for application of existing wave models to regional and long-term coastal evolution. The intern will be trained to run the appropriate models and will participate in the development of protocols for application of models to assessments of long-term sediment transport and coastal evolution. The intern will also participate in the collection and analysis of hydrodynamic data for more focused studies. SPECIFIC TASKS: 1. Based on existing wave information (observed, hind cast) models will be implemented to provide nearshore/coastal wave conditions for representative (storms, climatology) offshore wave conditions. 2. Model output will be analyzed to develop indices of sediment transport/coastal erosion for comparison to documented changes in shorelines/bathymetry. 3. Data will be collected and analyzed to address site-specific processes in areas of particular concern (tentatively, the role of inlets, shoals and jetties). BENEFIT: Intern will gain experience in application of wave models to assessment of coastal erosion. Intern will also participate in a full range of data collection, analysis and modeling approaches to understanding coastal processes. Participating in a broad multi-disciplinary study will provide experience and insight into the development and implementation of research programs to address societal issues. DURATION: 52 weeks (Probable start date late-September, 1998) LOCATION: St. Petersburg, Florida SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Completion of all requirements for a Bachelor*s degree with basic knowledge related to surface wave theory and description; some experience with analysis of Time Series data; basic statistics; experience with computer applications for data analysis. ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS DESIRABLE: Experience with wave evolution models and/or analysis or wave data. Advanced experience with analysis of Time Series data (co-spectra, directional wave spectra). Qualified SCUBA diver. Familiarity with MATLAB analysis packages. STIPEND: Determined by academic level of selected intern. $22,065 per year (four full years of academic study); $26,265 per year (bachelor*s degree with GPA of 2.9 on 4.0 scale OR 30 semester hours of graduate school). OVERTIME: Overtime is estimated for the purpose of data gathering on board research vessels or field work away from site. An applicant interested in an internship should submit the following application materials: Resume Detailed description of computer skills, particularly any skills and experience in designing and publishing WWW pages List course work pertaining to the project description if applying for a specific internship Three reference letters sent directly from the sources (not by the applicant) to Oak Ridge Associated Universities (address specified below).
