The incumbent will conduct stock assessments and other studies necessary to determine vital statistics and population parameters, and will develop and utilize mathematical models suitable for determining habitat requirements for anadromous fish resources. DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. The incumbent will design and implement surveys to collect biological and fisheries data necessary to assess the status of Atlantic striped bass stocks and other anadromous fish stocks with specific emphasis on those effects that are a direct result of interaction with Massachusetts based fisheries. Such surveys will be both fisheries dependent and independent, will focus on both commercial and recreational fisheries, and will involve tagging studies. 2. Tagging studies on striped bass and other fish species will be designed and implemented to determine information relative to migration, distribution and survival. 3. The incumbent will design a suitable sampling design to collect diet and growth data of striped bass along the Atlantic coast, and use those data to develop bioenergetics models for striped bass. 4. Analyses of information will be completed using the best analytical approach given the available data. A variety of fishery models (including yield-per recruit, stochastic recruitment simulations, and virtual population analysis) and statistical methods will be employed. 5. The incumbent will advise the DMF Director and his Program Managers concerning the results of work and will provide recommendations as to how different management options may impact fisheries and the resource. Effective written and oral reports will be required in the form of memos, formal stock assessments, project reports, and fisheries monitoring reports (as needed) to comply with interstate management mandates. Participation and presentation of report findings will be expected at state and federal technical/management meetings, public hearings, private organizations and associations. 6. Under direction, the incumbent will assist other projects to design and implement biological and fisheries surveys, create sampling designs, analyze data and recommend the use of appropriate fishery models and statistical methods for data analysis. MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional, para-professional or technical experience in marine biology or fisheries management work, of which (B) at least one year must have been in a professional capacity, or any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below. A Graduate degree with a major in marine, fisheries, or wildlife biology; fisheries or wildlife management; marine science or oceanography may be substituted for the required (A & B) experience*. *Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: An advanced degree with a strong background in population dynamics and related skills in mathematics, statistics, computer science, and modeling; skills in oral and written communications, including the ability to communicate assessment results to persons not skilled in population dynamics.
