A. GENERAL DEVELOPMENT NEWS

NATIONAL APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGY INFORMATION SERVICE (NATIS)

The newly formed NATIS seeks to promote the use of appropriate
technology (AT) in various fields of rural development activities in
South Africa. NATIS is the South African branch of RATIS (Regional
ATIS), a GTZ funded programme for Southern Africa.

A workshop was held from 1-3 April 1998 in Port St Johns where an
interim NATIS committee was established and a plan of action put in
place to look at activities to be carried out. The activities include
drawing up a constitution and business plan, raising resources for the
network, and the spread of the network to the other provinces of South
Africa. It was agreed that the network should, for an initial phase,
be limited to the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu/Natal and Mpumalanga (due to
the workshop participants), but with the option to expand if groups
from other provinces show interest.

The promotion of the use of AT through NATIS will be based on the
following specific objectives, namely creating a network between AT
practitioners to enable exchange of AT information, experiences and
knowledge through publications, seminars, workshops, study tours and
exchange visits, identifying local/provincial AT needs, collecting and
disseminating relevant AT information, research on AT innovations and
lobbying of government on the use of AT within its development
programmes.

Interested groups are invited to participate in the finalising of the
constitution and the BP.
