Environment '99
July 11-17
High school students who will be sophomores, juniors, or seniors in the fall
of '99 are eligible for the workshop. Students will work with faculty and
staff both in labs and in the field to explore the positive and negative
impacts we as human beings have on environmental systems by:
* Learning to define wetland areas and map ecosystems at Griffy Lake;
* Studying forest ecosystems at Brown County State Park and learning how
many deer are too many;
* Finding out about solid waste management and reduction techniques at the
local (Anderson Road) Landfill; and
* Measuring levels of iron and determine leaching problems at the IU water
ponds.

The cost is $285 per student, with a limited number of scholarships for
those who qualify.

Environmental Education '99
July 18-24
Environmental Education '99 is for high school and middle school science
teachers. Teachers will experience hands-on projects, from a student
perspective, to aid in supplementing current environmental education
curriculum. Areas to be covered include:
* Determining the characteristics of a biological or legally protected
wetland and its impact on life;
* Exploring coal mining pollution through on-site analysis;
* Collecting macroinvertebrate populations from streams to see if they
indicate water quality as good or bad; and
* Hands-on experiences modeled after Project WILD aquatic curricula.

The cost is $325 per teacher plus cost of credit hours. Teachers may take
this course for 0-3 credit hours which can be used for continuing education
credits through Indiana University.

Please print the application and mail it by June 15th with a $50
non-refundable deposit to: Summer Workshops, School of Public and
Environmental Affairs,
