BIOTRADE Initiative and the   Government of Spain are creating a
partnership to promote trade and investment in biological resources in a

socially and environmentally sustainable way.

      The Bolsa Amazônia is an initiative of POEMA (Poverty and
      Environment in Amazônia) and is organized under the auspices
      of UNCTAD's BIOTRADE Initiative. It is designed to promote
      the sustainable use of natural resources and biodiversity and
      improve living conditions in social, economic and ecological
      terms. Taking advantage of national and international market
      opportunities in biodiversity-based products, the Bolsa Amazônia
will link
      private sector and small land owners from the Amazon region to the

world
      market. It will provide information, establish trade networks and
promote new
      partnerships.

              Jean Mérieux in Lyon-Garland

      This level-4 high-security biological laboratory is
      one of the only three such laboratories in the
      world. It carries out unique research to develop
      reagents and diagnostic tests to help combat the
      resurgence of infectious diseases, particularly in
      developing countries. It will be a key element of
      the Research Center in Immunovirology of Emerging Diseases
      QT, Lyon-Garland, France.
