YEAR : 1952

ACTIVITY REWARDED : POPULARIZATION OF SCIENCE - to interpret and have a knowledge of the role of science, technology and general research in the improvement of public welfare, enrichment of the cultural heritage of nations/solution of problems of humanity.

PERIODICITY : Annual

VALUE : [[sterling]]1,000 and a Silver Albert EINSTEIN or NIELS BOHR (1885-1962) Medal and enables the recipient to travel to India as guest of the Kalinga Foundation Trust

UNESCO SCIENCE PRIZE

YEAR : 1968

ACTIVITY REWARDED : Outstanding contribution through the application of science and technology, to the development of a developing Member State or region, especially in the fields of science, technology, research and education, engineering and industrial development

PERIODICITY : Bi-annual coinciding with the Year of the General Conference

VALUE : $15,000 together with an appropriate plaque

CARLOS J. FINLAY PRIZE

YEAR :1980

ACTIVITY REWARDED : To promote research and development in the field of micro-biology and its applications (includ. immunology, molecular biology and genetics) by rewarding persons or groups for an outstanding contributions in this field.

PERIODICITY : Bi-annual coinciding with the General Conference year

VALUE : US$5,000 with a Niels Bohr or an Albert Einstein Silver medal

FUNDING SOURCE : CUBA - Dr. Carlos Juan Finlay, Cuban Scientist


INTERNATIONAL HYDROLOGY PRIZE
(Sponsored by UNESCO and WMO (World Meteo.Organization)

YEAR : 1982

ACTIVITY REWARDED : Individuals who have an outstanding contribution to hydrology such as confers on the candidate universal recognition of his international stature.

PERIODICITY : Annual

VALUE : Award of a Hydrology silver medal

FUNDING SOURCE : International Association of Hydrological Sciences


JAVED HUSAIN PRIZE FOR YOUNG SCIENTISTS

YEAR : 1987

ACTIVITY REWARDED : Outstanding pure or applied research carried out by young scientists in the natural or social sciences, technology, medicine or agriculture.

PERIODICITY : Bi-annual coinciding with the year of the General Conference

VALUE : Half the biennial interest earned from the Fund, and a Niehls Bohr or an Albert Einstein Silver medal and a certificate.

FUNDING SOURCE : Interest on donations provided by Dr. Javed Husain and other contributors


THE SULTAN QABOOS PRIZE FOR ENVIRONMENTAL PRESERVATION

YEAR : 1991

ACTIVITY REWARDED : Recognition to outstanding contributions in the management or preservation of the environment, consistent with the policies, aims and objectives of Unesco.

PERIODICITY : Bi-annual coinciding with the year of the General Conference

VALUE : Estimated to be approx. $15,000 to $20,000, and a Certificate in accordance with the Financial Regulations/Bureau of the International Co-ordinating Council of the MAB (Man & Biosphere)

FUNDING SOURCE : Interest on donation of $250,000 by Sultan Qaboos Bin Said of Oman
