This exceptional multimedia CD-ROM revives for its user the exciting experience of the explorers who discovered the last of the forgotten civilizations, Serindia, the sacred land of Buddhism. By following the path of those men who ventured to travel across this part of the world, it reveals unknown aspects of the cultural treasures of a region surrounded by one of the most imposing and inaccessible sites in the world: the Gobi desert. It was also one of the richest areas of cultural exchange and greatly contributed to the development of oriental and occidental arts and thought. Serindia, a land of legends around buried cities and treasures, has until now never been treated except in publications for a very specialized readership. Now, for the first time, the public at large can become acquainted with this fascinating place.
Based on a rich iconography and audiovisual material, the CD-ROM highlights the development of cultures, with special focus on history, archaeology, geography and ethnography. It presents many hitherto unpublished texts, archaeological data, a detailed cartography, objects from different museum collections throughout the world, as well as a dictionary and a specialized glossary. It opens the book of knowledge on Serindia through unusual means, such as a virtual reality flight of the region, manipulation of art objects or a three-dimensional visit of a grotto belonging to one of the most important Buddhist sites: Dunhunag (China). It also includes games that require the user to search for information in different files, to organize knowledge, to compare documents and to travel through time and space in Serindia.
For the first time, this unique international guide is available on CD-ROM. It provides quick and easy access to all the information contained in the Study Abroad guide. Search by selecting one or several parameters, such as field of study, scholarships and courses, institution (name or acronym), type of organization, country or region.

THE WORLD BIODIVERSITY DATABASE SERIES
The World Biodiversity Database series on CD-ROM is a computer-based information system created to foster taxonomic knowledge by producing easy-to-understand, user-friendly systems addressed to both specialists and the general public. It provides an important thesaurus for scientific research, monitoring studies, nature conservation and environmental projects, as well as marine and agricultural activities.
The CD-ROMs in this series are developed by outstanding specialists, under the co-ordination of the ETI Expert-center for Taxonomic Identification (University of Amsterdam) and UNESCO. They are of particular interest to researchers, lecturers and students, but many titles will also attract amateur naturalists and the general public.
At a time when the conservation of the Earth s fragile environment requires everyone s efforts, the World Biodiversity Database CD-ROM series is a timely contribution to foster understanding and general awareness about hitherto little-known aspects of nature. As such, it provides an excellent teaching and information tool for both the specialist and the layman.

The 50th anniversary of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization also means 50 years of publishing closely associated with the UNESCO's commitment to peace through international intellectual co-operation. Books are key instruments in fostering international public awareness about UNESCO's major programmes in literacy, bioethics, education, human rights, women, the environment, sustainable development and peace.
UNESCO Publishing's Publications Catalogue includes over 1,000 titles in English, French, Spanish, Russian, Chinese and Arabic, published under its own imprint or co-published.
A network of national distributors ensures its presence in a great number of countries. Co-publications and translations with commercial publishers allow further diffusion among a wide international audience.
UNESCO Publishing produces books, CD-ROMs, periodicals and scientific maps derived from UNESCO programmes and generally aimed at specialized users.
For the general public UNESCO Publishing has recently developed news series on key world issues. Series such as `Challenges' and `Cultures of Peace' respond to this trend.
For young readers, the `World Heritage' series is a best-seller with over 1.3 million copies printed in English, French and Spanish. The `Silk and Spice Routes' series, another editorial success, is now translated into some 15 languages. A new series, `The Slave Routes', is currently in preparation.
Large-scale international projects associating prestigious specialists from different countries have resulted in major works such as The General History of Africa, in eight volumes. The English edition was completed in 1993 and translations in some ten other languages including French, Spanish, Chinese, Arabic and Swahili are well under way. Another ambitious project is a new edition of the History of Humanity, in seven volumes. The first two volumes have already been published and the third is due at the end of 1996. History of Civilizations of Central Asia, in six volumes, has the first three volumes already published and two others foreseen for 1997 and 1998. A History of Latin America and a History of the Caribbean are also being prepared.
The `UNESCO Collection of Representative Works' plays a leading role in the preservation of the world's literary treasures by translating into widely used languages traditional and contemporary masterpieces from different countries. Readers have thus been able to become acquainted with Nobel Prize laureates Yasunari Kawabata, Vicente Aleixandre, Ivo Andritch, George Seferis and Halldor K. Laxness, whose works were almost unknown outside their own countries before being translated by UNESCO. Over 1,000 titles from about 100 countries have been published to date, including works by Henri Bergson, Ernest Hemingway, Rabindranath Tagore and Nagib Mahfuz, as well as ancient texts by unknown authors, epic poems, legends, plays, essays, literary criticism and short stories.
UNESCO scientific maps, resulting from international co-operation with prestigious cartographic institutions, include climatic, geological, hydrogeological, tectonic, mineralogical, metallogenic, vegetation and soil maps. These are listed in UNESCO Publishing's Catalogue of Scientific Maps and Atlases.
Among UNESCO's specialized journals, Museum International is a world reference on museology. Prospects is an international forum of ideas on comparative education and Copyright Bulletin provides information on the development and new challenges facing copyright today. Nature and Resources is devoted to environmental issues and the International Social Science Journal reviews new trends in the social and human sciences.
For the large public, the UNESCO Courier offers every month in 30 languages articles on world issues of universal concern.
A new quarterly magazine was launched in 1996, the World Heritage Review, addressed to a wide readership concerned with the preservation of natural and cutural sites included in UNESCO's World Heritage List.
Electronic publishing is becoming an important activity. Index Translationum lists 815,000 translated books in more than 100 countries from 1979 to 1994. UNESCO Databases includes bibliographic data on all UNESCO documents and publications; education; museums, monuments and sites; preventive education against AIDS; 10,000 social science institutions; as well as the UNESCO Thesaurus (7,000 terms) and the IBE Thesaurus (4,000 terms). The `World Biodiversity Database' series, available in English only, provides an excellent view on all aspects of the natural and marine environment and its living creatures. UNESCO: An Ideal on the Move, 1945-1995 recalls the Organization's history and highlights from its very beginnings. There are several forthcoming CD-ROMs on education, science and art, such as World Heritage Cities and Serindia.
