Subject: Re: QA? FTP by email To learn how to do just about everything by email, I'd suggest that you join the ACCMAIL mailing list (of which I'm the current moderator) which covers Accessing the Internet by Email. Send email to: LISTSERV@LISTSERV.AOL.COM with the following single line in the body of the message: SUBSCRIBE ACCMAILor in your case SUBSCRIBE ACCMAIL Tony Pang After subscribing to ACCMAIL, retrieve Dr. Bob Rankin's Guide to Accessing the Internet via Email document which is listed in the subscription document you will receive. This is my list of current ftpmail servers (standard disclaimers apply): bitftp@plearn.edu.pl (Poland) bitftp@pucc.princeton.edu (United States) bitftp@vm.gmd.de (Germany - still OK 18Oct97) ftp-request@netcom.com (United States * Netcom files only *) ftpmail@conicit.ve (Venezuela) ftpmail@demos.su (Russia - 18Oct97 requires a fee and signup) ftpmail@dna.affrc.go.jp (Japan) ftpmail@flight.cn.nctu.edu.tw (Taiwan - added 02Nov97) ftpmail@ftp.dartmouth.edu (United States * Local files only *) ftpmail@ftp.luth.se (Sweden) ftpmail@ftp.sogang.ac.kr (South Korea) -- SLOW 6+ hours ftpmail@ftp.sunet.se (Sweden) ftpmail@ftp.uni-stuttgart.de (Germany) ftpmail@ftpmail.ramona.vix.com (United States) in service (sometimes) ftpmail@garbo.uwasa.fi (Finland) ftpmail@giswitch.sggw.waw.pl (Poland - added 12Aug97) ftpmail@immagica.it (Italy - added 26Aug97) ftpmail@inf.tu-dresden.de (Germany * Local files only *) ftpmail@mercure.umh.ac.be (Belgium - added 02Nov97) ftpmail@nctuccca.edu.tw (Taiwan) ftpmail@oak.oakland.edu (United States) ftpmail@obelix.vslib.cz (Czech Republic) ftpmail@pcug.co.uk (United Kingdom - added 02Nov97) ftpmail@pier.botik.ru (Romania - added 02Nov97) ftpmail@sunsite.auc.dk (Denmark) ftpmail@win.net (United States) ftpxcorreo@ftp.rcp.net.pe (Peru) Example: Suppose you are an OS/2 user and somebody said that there is a PM mail program available at FTP site ftp.coast.net in the directory SimTel/os2/internet and that the file name is pmmail11.zip Suppose you want to use ftpmail to a BITNET ftp mail site to retrieve this file. What are the commands? Send mail to: bitftp@pucc.princeton.edu with the following lines in the body of the note: open ftp.coast.net -- open the site where the file is located chdir SimTel/os2/internet -- change to the proper directory dir -- get a directory listing to see what else is there binary -- it's a binary file; use ASCII for text files get pmmail11.zip -- get the file you want quit -- you're done here You will then receive back 6 uuencoded files that can be uudecoded to re-assemble the file "pmmail11.zip" Supose you don't want 6 files but would like to get it in one big uuencoded file? Send mail to: bitftp@pucc.princeton.edu with the following lines in the body of the note: open ftp.coast.net -- open the site where the file is located chunksize 0 -- get one "big" uuencoded file chdir SimTel/os2/internet -- change to the proper directory dir -- get a directory listing to see what else is there binary -- it's a binary file; use ASCII for text files get pmmail11.zip -- get the file you want quit -- you're done here NOTE: chunksize command *ONLY* works at BITNET (bitftp) ftpmail sites. You will receive back 194196 bytes in one "huge" uuencoded file. You will have to learn about uuencoding/uudecoding as well as MIME, base64 and other esoteric coding systems that allow binary files to be transferred via email. If you have a URL then no doubt you are interested in retrieving a web page rather than an ftp file unless the web page shows the link to the ftp site where the file is located. Remember, ftpmail servers should be used to retrieve ftp files located on ftp servers. To retrieve web pages and the images associated with them, you will have to learn how to use Agora, Getweb and w3mail servers. The retrieved web pages can be in HTML format or plain text format depending upon the command you use.The HTML format can be used to view the web pages off-line after you have retrieved them via email. Gophermail servers are used to retrieve files located on gopher servers. Gophermail can also be used to retrieve Usenet postings. The only gophermail servers currently in existence are: gopher@dna.affrc.go.jp Japan gophermail@ncc.go.jp or gomail@ncc.go.jp or gopher@ncc.go.jp gophermail@eunet.cz Czech Republic To find files located on ftp servers you will have to learn how to use the various search engines by email. If your question has something to do with www-search engines like Altavista, Hotbot, etc, or in general fill-out-forms on WWW sites, be sure to read "Accessing the Internet via email - User guide to WWW search engines" by Gerald E. Boyd. It can be obtained by sending email to: bitftp@pucc.princeton.edu open ftp.netcom.com cd /pub/gb/gboyd get wsintro.faq quit or if you'd like to learn how to use an Agora server, send email to: agora@dna.affrc.go.jp with the following line: send ftp://ftp.netcom.com/pub/gb/gboyd/wsintro.faq This faq covers the access to several (all major) search-engines, has a section with all available help-files (very helpful!) and also shows you how to "crack" such a form yourself. -- Gerry Boyd -- gboyd@netcom.com ============================================================================= Reference.COM archives MJRB-TRAINING as of: Jan. 30, 1997 and MJRB-QA as of February 1997.
