WHAT WILL BE COVERED IN THE NEXT FEW LESSONS
***************************************************************
In this lesson, you will be provided with information on
downloading TRUMPET and various documents that describe
setting up TRUMPET on your PC. In subsequent lessons there will
be additional suggestions for various configuration files.

For those of you who have a shell account, this software
package is the second connection file your need. For those of
you with a SLIP/PPP account this file is your connection file.

As with the lesson on TIA, there are a number of documents I
suggest you get and spend time reading. These documents will
be most helpful in getting you up and going with TRUMPET.

There are also a number of other relevant files in some of
the sites suggested, so if you wish, download those files in
preparation for the next series of lessons. However, there
will not be any comments on these files in this lesson.

One point I wish to make at this time is that the files
suggested may not be the latest version of the client I am
discussing. The updates to many of these clients occur
regularly so that the version I may list here will have been
the latest version at the time of writing these lessons.

Thus, when you go into a site to download the client, there may
be a later version, so always try to find the latest version.
On the other hand, even if you don't initially retrieve the
latest version, as you get going on the internet, you will find
yourself continuing to upgrade your clients. That part of
surfing is one of the fun parts to the internet.

*************************************************************
WHAT IS WINSOCK TRUMPET
*************************************************************
Winsock Trumpet is a TCP/IP stack utility or a WINDOWS socket
driver. There is no need to understand what TCP/IP means beyond
the idea that it is a type of protocol or code that allows your
personal computer to connect into a SLIP Host computer.

In non-technical terms, Winsock Trumpet works like a terminal
program, in that it will dial-up your host computer and set
the stage for using clients to access the Internet. Thus,
Winsock Trumpet is an important software connection package
that you will need on your computer.

*************************************************************
WHAT DO I NEED
*************************************************************
You will need to have a graphics capable computer. Since
these lessons are principally oriented toward the IBM
compatible, the information is oriented toward this type of
computer. However, those of you who use other computers, a
number of sites which carry the files being recommended also
have information available on the MAC computer.

You will need at least the following things:

* Windows 3.1+

* A fast modem (at minimum a 9600 w/compression. However, it
will be to your advantage to have as fast a modem as you
are able to afford, as indicated in an earlier lesson.)

* Pkunzip (Pkware's compression utilities as suggested in an
           earlier lesson.)

* A winsock.dll or the Winsock Trumpet file authored by Peter
Tattam. The current release is twsk20b.zip

WHERE DO I GET THE NEEDED FILES
*************************************************************
There are various sites from which to download the Trumpet
Winsock file. In addition to the file 'twsk20b.zip' file,
there are many other files you may want to download in
preparation for future lessons.

When connecting to the various FTP sites, you may not be able
to access them right away because they are often very busy.
So, try again or try another site.

The suggested files to seek and get are listed below. Some of
the suggested files are not available at all sites given as a
reference for the Trumpet file. So, you may want to keep the
list of sites and explore them all at some time in the future.

The first listing are the files I recommend. The second
listing are related files you might want to explore at some
time. I must indicate again that I am not endorsing any file.
I am offering you my own personal opinion of the files I have
enjoyed using. In later lessons on the various clients, I
will suggest additional files.

MY PREFERRED FILES:

twsk20b.zip ---- Peter R. Tattam's Trumpet Winsock file. This

COMMENT: This site has a number of help files which are
worthwhile to obtain. These help files provide a
good overview for setting up the Trumpet Utility.

FILES:
twsk20b.zip -- The Trumpet Winsock file.
	 n16e11b3.exe - The Netscape file.
	 ws_ftp.zip --- The FTPclient file.
jjv_slip.txt - A very good file describing the
                        set-up for Trumpet.
	 login.cmd ---- A suggested login.cmd file for
                        Trumpet.

COMMENT: Oak.Oakland.Edu is the primary mirror of the SimTel,
The Coast to Coast Software Repository. This site has
many fine files that you will be interested in
reviewing in addition to the Trumpet Winsock file.
Also, at this site is the newest version of Trumpet
Winsock (twsk21d.zip). Note, however, this version
will only run 30 days unless you register this
version, which I encourage you to do anyway.

COMMENT: This site has the basic files and is often easier to
get into that some of the other sites.

HOST: b-box.trumpet.com.au
LOCATION: /winsock
LOCATION: /winsock/docs

COMMENTS:
This site is often very busy and difficult to FTP into and make
connection. This site is the home site for the WINSOCK TRUMPET
files and has the latest revision --twsk21d.zip and a good
documentation file about the trumpet program. If you consider
getting this file, you will have 30 days to evaluate the file
and then you will have to register it or it will cease to
function. The main difference between this revision and the
twsk20b.zip version is a few enhancements and an on-line help
file that is an excellent help file for understanding all
aspects of Trumpet.

COMMENT: This site also has many of the basic files both for
TIA and for WINSOCK TRUMPET and other CLIENTS. When into this
site, pull down the INDEX file for a listing of all files.
