Subject: Science Citation Index (SCI)

Dear Researcher,

NCSI announces the launching of yet another important CD-ROM
service - SCIENCE CITATION INDEX ON CD-ROM (SCI).

This service is brought to you by NCSI, in association with the
IISc Library.

1. WHAT IS SCI?

The Science Citation Index (SCI) produced by Institute for Scien-
tific Information, USA, is a multidisciplinary index to over 3300
major journals covering 100 scientific disciplines. The SCI
indexes every article of significant item - including letters,
notes, comments and editorials in every publication it fully
covers.

2. AVAILABILITY :

NCSI has SCI CDs from 1993 - 1996. These provide access to bibli-
ographic data only, and not to abstracts.

3. FEATURES OF SCI DATABASE :

Two of the features that make SCI unique are Cited References
and Related Records.

CITED REFERENCES : When you search by citation, you look up
for either a specific author, or any particular paper of his
or a patent to see how many articles in the database cited
that author or his particular paper or patent. To illustrate
this further by an example - Suppose Prof G. Padmanabhan
wants to know who has cited all his papers, or anyone of his
publications, NCSI can retrieve from SCI for the years 1993
-1996 only, list of all articles published during 1993 -1996
that have cited him or anyone of his papers.

RELATED RECORDS : Another feature that may be of interest is
the Related Records field in SCI. Article A is said to be
related to Article B, if they have at least one bibliographic
reference in common. Usually, the more the number of refer-
ences two articles have in common, the stronger the subject
    relationship is between them.

4. WHAT CAN THE SCI CDs AT NCSI BE USED FOR?

In addition to keyword based searching to find all papers on a
specific topic, SCI is better suited for citation searches :

    1. To get the list of articles published during 1993-1996
which have cited all the publications of a First Author.
Format : Full Name of the First Author along with initials,
if any. For Example : padmanaban-g

    2. To get the list of articles published during 1993-1996
which have cited anyone of the publications of an author.
    Format : Full Name-Year-Journal Name-Volume-Pagination.
    For Example : Padmanaban-g-1989-Trends-Biochem-Sci-V14-P492

Note: Only First Author can be searched as a Cited Author.
