PUBLICATIONS CENTRE FOR ADULT AND CONTINUING EDUCATION (CACE) Shirley Walters, 1997. Globalization, Adult Education and Training: Impacts and Issues. R99,00. This publication is concerned with the role of adult education and training within a context of globalisation. It takes a look at how adult education and training is being shaped by the restructuring of the economic, political, cultural and social life around the globe and what the response to this new pressure is. It attempts to address some of these questions from the eyes of both practitioners and academics and it opens up debates and discussion in order to engage and stimulate practitioners interest, without claiming to grasp all the implications of given final answers. Chapters have been grouped under four headings to illustrate issues and concerns that manifest in different sites of practice, namely The Impact of Globalization on Adult Education and Training, Adult Education and Training Strategies, Participation, Problems and Possibilities, and Life-long Learning Reconsidered. A strong theme that runs through the publication is the argument that for the majority to benefit the drive must come from an approach to economic and social development which recognises the connection between society and the economy, where human values - not human capital - predominate. It also looks at the concept of learning throughout life as one of the keys to the next century, and draws attention to all the ways in which adults learn at different points in their lives outside recognised educational institutions G.
