Its feasibility study (1994) conducted by Gunter Pauli identified about 10 target subject areas, one of these was IBS for Breweries. The IBSnet therefore served this subproject (IBS Project) that I coordinated. The IBS Project was funded from 1995 to 1999; in 1995 by the headquarters of UNU and from 1996 by the Institute of Advanced Studies of the UNU. (UNU/IAS is a research and training center of the UNU). When the project ended in 1999, it became a sub-group of the IOBB (International Organization of Botechnology and Bioengineering; http://www.ozemail.com.au/~doelle). IBSnet still maintains connections with UNU/IAS which provides funds for special IBSnet projects, e.g. the 2000 Internet Conference on Material Flow Analysis of Integrated Bio-Systems. You can find a list of IBSnet past activities on e-seminars, e-workshops, e-conferences, e-extensions at: http://www.ias.unu.edu/proceedings/icibs/ibs/ibsnet/past-activities.html the above provides a brief history of IBSnet......pls feel free to ask for more information. regards Jacky Foo Coordinator-IBSnet Integrated Bio-Systems Network International Organization of Biotechnology and Bioengineering http://www.ias.unu.edu/proceedings/icibs/ibs/ibsnet From foo@SWIPNET.SE Sun Oct 8 11:41:13 2000 Date: Sun, 1 Oct 2000 11:22:38 +0200 From: Jacky Foo Reply-To: "IBSnet: General Forum on Integrated Bio-Systems" To: ET-W1@SEGATE.SUNET.SE Subject: [IBS-GEN] IBSnet - business strategy [ The following text is in the "iso-8859-1" character set. ] [ Your display is set for the "US-ASCII" character set. ] [ Some characters may be displayed incorrectly. ] Michael Theroux asked (via a private mail): >Q: what is the business structure of IBSnet As IBSnet was established under an academic structure it did not have a business structure. IBSnet is now a sub-group of IOBB. As IOBB is an international NGO, IBSnet still has not developed a business structure. However, as IOBB has a membership fee system, IBSnet started to collect membership fees from people only in 2000 and from those with an annual income of above 24,000 US$. (50 US$ from those below 48,000 US$ and 100 US$ from those above). So far there are only 11 members paying members. While I am very thankful to these people who made special efforts to make their first payment for 2000, I am very disappointed by the poor response from the rest. Of the 600 members, there may be about 40 others who can help with their membership fees and contribute a minimum of 2000 US$. At the moment, IBSnet imposes payment of membership fees if when members wish to participate in special IBSnet activities, e.g. the MFA Internet Conference. Other activities are: (a) IBSnet Forum (et-w1@segate.sunet.se, http://segate.sunet.se/archives/et-w1.html) is a public forum. So anyone can join this discussion group. (b) IBSnet News Exchange (et-w3@segate.sunet.se http://segate.sunet.se/archives/et-w3.html) imposes a restriction and receives only members who have submitted their membership forms. For subscribers with income of below 24,000 US$ per year are required to contribute 2 news items per year to remain in this mailing list. If they dont make their 2 contributions by the end of the 2000, then in 2001, they will be charged 50 US$ if they wish to continue to receive IBSnet News. (c) IBSnet E-Seminars (et-w2@segate.sunet.se http://segate.sunet.se/archives/et-w2.html) admits members who have submitted their membership forms and paid their dues. I certainly would welcome suggestions on how to make IBSnet financially sustainable. regards jacky
