15. ASIAN ELEPHANT CONSERVATION CENTRE

The Asian Elephant Conservation Centre was set up at the
Centre for Ecological Sciences, Indian Institute of Science,
Bangalore, to assist the Asian Elephant Specialist Group of the
IUCN/SSC in its efforts to promote the conservation of elephants
in the wild and in captivity.
The activities of the Centre include :
1. Maintaining a database on elephant numbers, status and
distribution throughout Asia. This information is being
computerised and updated as new information is received.
2. Maintaining a complete bibliography on Asian elephant on
computer, which can be accessed through key-words, author and
title.
3. Promoting projects that are important for the conservation
and management of elephants.
4. Carrying out research to modify and improve the existing
techniques in censusing elephants in the wild.
5. Assisting Governments and other agencies in the management of
elephant populations by providing technical assistance and
organising training programmes and workshops.
