Marking the 10th anniversary of the most serious industrial accident in
history, which occured at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant on April 26, 1986,
an international conference is being held April 20-22, 1996 at Dom Uchitelya
in Kiev, Ukraine entitled "Lessons of Chernobyl".
Conference speakers include Alexey Yablokov (environmental adviser to
Yeltsin), Amory Lovins (energy efficiency expert and Director of the Rocky
Mountain Institute), Christopher Flavin (Worldwatch Institute), Antony
Froggatt (Greenpeace International), Ernst Ulrich von Weizsacker (Wuppertal
Institute), Harvey Wassermann (Greenpeace USA), and others. Conference
participants, with roughly equal numbers from East and West, total around 220
people. These include representatives of non-governmental organizations as
well as prominent scientists from Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, and many other
countries of the world.
The goals of the conference are: 1) to present the true extent and
consequences of the accident, 2) to clarify the problematic role of nuclear
power in energy policy, particularly in Eastern Europe, and 3) to explore
options that could lead to a nuclear-free future. Each day of the three-day
conference addresses one of these goals:
April 20 - "Chernobyl: Facts and Consequences":
- medical effects and social repercussions;
- economic costs and political implications;
- extent and effect of the radioactive contamination;
- current situation and dangers posed by the Chernobyl plant.
April 21 - "Nuclear Energy: The Problem":
- actual costs of nuclear power;
- Western nuclear industry's activities in Eastern Europe;
- safety issues and the risks of nuclear power;
- economics and international financing of nuclear power;
- political strategies and implications.
April 22 - "Energy Options: The Solution":
- energy efficiency strategies, demand-side and supply-side;
- renewable energy development and promising new technologies;
- East-West cooperation in developing long-term energy solutions;
- positive roles for non-governmental organizations (NGOs);
- prospects for a nuclear-free future.
A press conference will be held in Kiev at Dom Uchitelya on April 22 at 12:45
at which the results of the conference will be summarized, and a memorandum
entitled "Lessons of Chernobyl" will be presented.
VISIT TO CHERNOBYL PLANT: On April 23, following the conclusion of the
"Lessons of Chernobyl" conference, press representatives have the opportunity
to join conference participants on a fact-finding visit to the Chernobyl
Nuclear Power Plant and the 30 km restricted zone. The trip costs $35 per
person to cover transportation and organizing expenses. Please confirm in
advance your wish to join the Chernobyl visit.
Press representatives are invited to attend any or all plenary sessions
during the three days of the conference, and to cover any small-group
workshops that may be of special interest (a full conference program can be
faxed to you upon request). One-on-one interviews with conference speakers can
also be scheduled. Please notify the press coordinator at the above fax/phone
number if you wish to participate in the "Lessons of Chernobyl" conference as
an accredited journalist and/or if you plan to attend the press conference so
that advance arrangements can be made.
The "Lessons of Chernobyl" conference is being organized by the Heinrich Boll
Foundation, which is associated with the German Green Party, and named after
the German writer and Nobel Laureate Heinrich Boll, who was one of the Party's
co-founders. The Foundation is based in Cologne, Federal Repubic of Germany.
