Autonomous  wind  power  systems  in  10-1000 kW  range, with 
  diesel  back - up  and  possibly  hydroelectric storage, are 
  already  an  economic  alternative  to  conventional  diesel 
  generation  for  isolated  communities in good  wind regimes.  
  With  existing  technology, the wind  turbine can be used to 
  give  significant  fuel savings, although it  cannot replace 
  the  diesel.  Systems are of  low solidity (high speed) type 
  and comprise horizontal, as well as, vertical axis windmills.
