Ecological Modeling: Other Contacts
We are adding other links of interest to modelers or those interested in models.
The list is being built this semester. If you would like to add your site to
this list, send an email with a short description of your site and its URL.
Various U.S. Agencies (federal, state, or mixes)
-
The Forest Ecosystem Dynamics website (NASA)
- This website describes a large project that links ecosystem simulation models with remote sensing to monitor changes in ecological processes and patterns with natural and human disturbances. It includes a conceptual diagram of the linkages between ecosystem processes and biophysical input data as well as links to other relevant websites.
-
The VEMAP website
- VEMAP is a large project with the goal of comparing the performance of 6 simluation models of ecosystem dynamics:
BIOME2,
BIOME-BGC,
CENTURY,
DOLY,
MAPPS, and
TEM.
The models are run under different climate change scenarios (from 3 global circulation models).
The VEMAP web site has links to all of the simulation models respective home websites and also offers the input data, personnel, and some references.
-
Ecological Modeling Home Page at Oak Ridge National Lab (DOE)
- This is the ecological modeling home page of the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Their modeling efforts include modeling species dynamics and modeling habitat.
-
The Integrated Modeling Project, Southern Global Change Program (USFS)
- The IMP is an integrated forest health and productivity assessment of southern and southeastern forests in relation to changing climate, air quality, and land use changes.
-
South Florida Ecosystem Program
- The South Florida Ecosystem Program is one of several study areas within the USGS Ecosystem Program. The program employs biological modeling in support of ecolgocial success criteria.
Various University Departments or Academic Laboratories (U.S.)
-
Aber Group, University of New Hampshire
- This is the Forest Ecosystem Studies web page. It contains links on nitrogen addition studies, remote sensing and ecosystem modeling (including the PnET home page).
There is a list of people associated with the research including their email addressees and a citation list.
-
Natural Resource and Ecology Laboratory, Colorado State University
- This is the CENTURY model home page. It contains a model description,
abstracts and citations, information about the researchers links to the
Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory (NREL) at Colorado State University.
Also you can download a copy of the CENTURY model here (PC or UNIX).
-
Northwest Alliance for Computational Science and Engineering
- NACSE provides Web-based training materials and tools for learning computational techniques and parallel programming, aimed at scientists and students. The ecological simulation page takes you through a self-help tutorial on ecological simulation.
-
International Society of Ecological Modelling (ISEM)
- This is the North American homepage for the International Society of Ecological Modelling. It has some interesting links and a good general reference.
-
Geospatial Analysis and Modeling of Ecological SystemsLaboratory
- GAMES is an interesting page dealing with the modeling and geospatial analysis program at the University of central Florida.
-
Ecosystem Modeling Group, Department of Oceanography, Texas A&M University
- This group studies the interactions between physical, biological and chemical processes in a variety of marine environments.
-
Spatial Modeling Environment
- A site with a general overview of some landscape models and applications.
-
The Swarm Simulation System
- Complex ecological modelling from the home of complexity theory.
-
Mathematics Archives MSDOS Software for Modelling
- Downloadable modeling archives, mostly for teaching purposes.
International Sites
-
Ecological Modelling at the University of Kassel
- This server provides easy access to available information about ecological modelling (simulation models, descriptions of these models, simulation-software, persons and literature). It is also for modellers who want to make their models easily available. Additionally this WWW-Server integrates an interface to ECOBAS (Documentation of mathematical formulation of ecological processes).
-
Methods, Conceptions, and Ideas on Ecological Modeling
- This Russian page provides a page of
links that is searchable by subject area (forests, insects, fishes, birds), model type (cellular automata, individual-based, or explicit space), or organizational level (population, community, landscape, global), as well as links to journals and software.
-
Individual-based Models (Craig Reynolds)
- An annotated of IBM's, including introductory text and links to other sites as well as downloadable resources, references, active labs, and conferences.
-
MEDRUSH (UK)
- Spatial and temporal modelling at scales commensurate with global
environmental change. Intended for areas up to 5,000 km2 and up to 100
years, combines GIS and large-scale distributed process models. It
provides scenarios of vegetation growth, distribution of mfunctional
types, and forecasts water runoff and sediment yield in response to
variations in climate and land use.
-
The WIMOVAC Model
- WIMOVAC (Windows Intuitive Model of Vegetation Response to Atmospheric
and Climate Change) is a multi-layer leaf-to-canopy scaling model which
uses physiological theory/data and environmental conditions to predict
canopy-level photosynthetic responses to global climate change. It
operates within a Windows environment and was developed as
an experimental tool for "non-specialist user groups." It is available to
download (free) on its website.
