Partnerships for Sustainable Development
While the DSDS 2001 and the DSDS 2002 dealt with pertinent issues of 'poverty' and 'livelihoods' respectively, DSDS 2003 focused on ways to turn development priorities, set at the WSSD (World Summit on Sustainable Development), into concrete action. The fourth edition of the DSDS, scheduled for 4-7 February 2004, aims to carry forward the debate and facilitate further dialogues with specific emphasis on partnerships for sustainable development: a significant outcome of the Johannesburg process. While an encouraging number of partnerships - built around the WEHAB(water, energy, health, agriculture, and biodiversity) themes - have come up, many more are needed to meet the Millennium Development Goals of poverty reduction vis-a-vis protecting the earth's environment for a sustainable future. This requires unprecedented efforts on the part of all stakeholders; the role of science and technology, to that effect, becomes paramount. Besides, governments have to agree on many propositions, corporates have to show greater resolve, and civil society groups have to be more proactive. DSDS 2004 will essentially focus on, analyse, and assess innovative partnerships in the post-WSSD scenario and the way forward. |
