New Delhi July 19. Captive elephants — threatened by car-hits on the busy and chaotic roads of the national capital — will now wear reflectors to ensure that motorists are able to spot them in the dark.

The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), in tandem with the Wildlife Trust of India, has decided to supply reflectors that can be attached to the `howdah' (the seat on which the riders sit) and the ropes which tie this contraption to the elephant's back.

The IFAW today said it had attended three cases of road accident, involving five elephants, in the last two years.

The most recent case was in December, when a female elephant was hit by a speeding truck in the early hours.

It was severely injured and ultimately died.
