HOWRAH: The congested streets of Howrah have unwelcome visitors. About a dozen elephants and their mahouts have invaded the town and are roaming the busy roads choking the chaotic traffic.

The owners are using the jumbos for earning their livelihood.

Bystanders are awe-struck to see the elephants walking the streets. Schoolchildren, shopkeepers and office-goers, however, are having to face the traffic snarls. One of the elephants was spotted in the busy Salkia area with a crowd following.

"I have seen elephants in the zoo, but it's so different to see them in the open," exclaimed a girl, stopping on the way to school with her friends.

Shopkeepers were feeding and offering money to the elephant, while a bus driver stopped in the middle of the road to take a peek at the tamasha. Traffic was thrown out of gear, but nobody complained.
