Young Environmentalist award by Volvo

Volvo has announced the Volvo Adventure Young Environmentalists Award contest 2003 - a global contest involving students from across the world - encouraging them to research and present projects on pertinent environmental issues.

The contest calls for a team of five students aged between 10 and 16 - accompanied by an adult supervisor - to identify, plan and execute an environmental project that will make a difference in local environment. The project would have to be posted on the contest website - www.volvoadventure.org - by December 31, 2003.The site also offers several activity kits and project aids which may be utilized by registered teams to enhance their projects. An Internet-based global environment competition for young people, Volvo Adventure runs on national and international schemes. A panel comprising eminent environmentalists would judge the projects at the national level and one project, representing India, would be selected to participate in the Global Finals in Sweden in May 2004.

The winning team would get to rub shoulders with students from around the world, congregating to make their presentation on their accomplishment. Teams would have to make a physical presentation of their assignments to the international judging panel. Apart from prizes ranging from US$4,000 to US$10,000, the winning team would win acclaim and recognition from environmentalists and the industry worldwide. Last year over 30 teams participated in the contest. At the Global Finals held in September 2002, the team representing India-Team Little Eco-Friends rom St. Josephs Indian High School, Bangalore went on to win the Award and a grant of US$10,000 for their project on reducing the usage of poly-bags.
