Amphibian diversity

All the present day amphibians are included in three extant orders Apoda (Caecilians), Salientia (Frogs and Toads) and Caudata (Salamanders and newts). Order Salientia being the largest, with 29 families harbours 4837 species, where as Caudata has 10 families and 502 species and Apoda with 5 families and 165 species. In all, 5504 species have been recorded from all continents (Except Antarctica) (Frost, 2002).

India

In India, there are as many 205 (BCPP CAMP Report, 1997) amphibians belonging to all the extant orders. Himalayan newt Pleurodeles verrucossus is the only Caudata member from India. Anurans have 188 species, and Caecilians with 16 species. These 205 species are further classified into endemic and non-endemic to India. Endemic amphibians amounts to 127 from 8 families and 26 genera.  Similarly non-endemic amphibians belong to 7 families, 27 genera and 75 species.
