THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Chief Minister A K Antony on Wednesday said the State Biodiversity Board will shortly commence operation as part of the environment programme to bring about effective co-ordination in this area.

Inaugurating the 15th Kerala Science Congress, organised by the Science, Technology and Environment Committee here, Antony said in the absence of a reliable biodiversity register in the state, it has become difficult to counter biopiracy which has plagued the developing countries.

Kerala is gifted with rich biodiversity and the scenic beauty of our beaches and western ghats is the envy of the world, he said.

But the high density of population, unsustainable use of precious resources such as water and above all, lack of awareness of sustainable consumption have posed a grave threat to our biodiversity and environment, he pointed out.
